Antifreeze leakin out of the head

I've pretty much established that the o-rings need to be replaced. My first question, is that since it was ran dry (i lost my coolant due to a stud) it sat for a little bit, could the o-ring have dry-rotted?

Onto the next question(s)-i think i know everything i need to do, please correct me if i missed a step.

Start by draining coolant. Then, Take off the head bolts (in criss cross pattern). Next, take off the coolant hose off the thermostat, but don't take off the thermostat. Next, take off the head. Take off old O-rings, scrape/clean it. Next, put new o-rings on (do i need some special o-ring grease?). After putting them on, put head on, put bolts on, tighten in criss cross pattern (do i need loctite on the bolts? or anti-seize?), And torque them (18-19.5 correct?) connect all hoses and bleed??? anything i missed?

sleds a 99 polaris xc 700 btw

i pm'ed you back. The leak is on the outside coming right from above the cylinders right where the o-rings are.

could you go on bristows and look at the parts finder and tell me what part # your talking about? I see where the coolant is coming out (i haven't started the sled in 3 weeks which is why it confuses me why it's leaking all of a sudden, or maybe i just didn't notice it before). it's coming out not just below the "colored" part of the head, but below the whole head itself including that "non-colored" part of it, so right above the cylinders. Right where the o-rings are. And, there's no coolant inside the motor at all, so i'm assuming the outer o-ring?

Indy another Poo 2s DOA is going to hurt your average ya know. :) O rings usually don't just break without reason. Look very closely at the break area for hairline cracks sometimes hard to see & I made that mistake with car engines back in the day with a 58 Ford V8 when I was your age. I got real good at changing head gaskets & until I finally found the hairline cracked head then I had that milled & problem solved. Worth a close look.

Head work

Indy, After reading the manual for my brand new to me Sea-Doo this summer I tackled the top end. I bought it thinking it was perfect and then found the jug was cracked, that sucked. After new parts, sent to the machine shop for boring to match new pistons (cause these had something go through the motor at one time) i put it all together. After running it for a couple of hours the bolts backed out on me. I used the suggested BRP liquid, and I don't know what it was I just bought the part number. I put blue loctite on them so I shouldn't have to worry about them.

Sorry so long winded. And I do have some experience. I swapped my first motor at 14 and rebuilt my first engine by 16. From all the posts you sound like you like to tinker and thats great! After getting my mechanical engineering degree I can tell you that tinkering will help you understand problems better.

Indy, in the past I have found that the O-rings in the head are just a little to big from the OEM. put them in the freezer before you install them. they shrink about a millionth of an inch. That is all you will need. Since the o ring is thinner than spagetti they don't have much of a track to lay in. be ever so careful that the o-ring does'nt move out of the track it sits in when you put the head back on. I have seen the O-rings mushed out of the tracks and seal for a while. Most the time leaking will start first by the temp probe side or towards the front of the motor. Tighten the bolts in a criss cross pattern to help prevent squeezing the O-ring out of the groove it sits in.

i retightened all the head bolts in a criss cross pattern, only one bolt had to be slightly tightened with the torque wrench. No leaks though. I'm going to buy the part when it comes (it didn't come today) in case in the future i wanna do a rebuild. If we told the dealer we dont want it no more, they're gonna think we went somewhere else (another dealer 15 min. away would've had it in stock) and i don't think they'd be too happy. I'll just ride it like i stole it unless i notice it leak some more. I possibly could've spilled some on the head when adding some this fall? i dunno.

here's some pics of the wonderful base i got going, and a pic of the sled, did a few minor things (mostly handlebar stuff) to it since you guys last seen it. Along with a few pics of the spots where i got a little flapper happy.

here's a few pics of our great snow conditions today during riding. It's coming down hard right now. Gonna get a foot tonight. The first pic i took at 7am this morning. Enjoy the last pic :) (i rode on this little triangle plot of land for years, dethatching it in the spring, mowing it ALL SUMMER and this spring they decided to plant 300 trees. Well in front of this mini-forest, there's a good chunk of grass by the ditch, and the janitor right before the snow flew decided to plop this good ole sign in the middle of the ditch (in the town right of way, it's legal to ride there) just thought you guys would get a good laugh! Oddly enough, he pounded in the sign facing my yard, not the road lol!

indy, i use to have the exact same sled. mine leaked only when it was warmed up. found out i had a hair line crack on the side of the jug but didnt do it when it was cooled. i went thru 2 used jugs till i bought a new one from polaris and fixed the problem. just something to think about. one of the funnest sleds i ever rode
