Our Hailey was diagnosed with canine Multicentric Lymphoma (sub-stage a) last Thursday. We started chemo CHOP** University of Wisconsin (Madison) on Tuesday. Anyone have any experience with their dog?

*CHOP Protocol Template:

wk1 : Vincristine IV
wk2 : Cytoxan IV
wk3 : Vincristine IV
wk4 : Doxorubicin (Adriamycin)
wk5 : Blood work only
This cycle repeated 5 times*

They are top notch there. No experience on the chemo, however, when we bring our boy over for his follow up visits, there are many folks that come from all around for their dogs to be treated with chemo. All I can say is great things for them.

Our guy has an extremely rare condition and they found one surgeon in the world that performs a procedure that has given him and us, hope. Maybe see you over there in two weeks ;)

Luckily for us, our local vet has the qualifications and lab to perform most of the treatments so that will save A LOT of windshield time. Week 4 : Doxorubicin (Adriamycin) is a very nasty drug and if any gets outside the vein, Hailey's leg will be amputated to save her life. I will not put this pressure on my Vet. So next Madison apt is Feb 29th 7:30 - 9:00am, I'll be there.

Me and Skye are keeping our paws crossed 4 you and Hailey! Nothing is too good for our fur children, keep us posted on her progress. Had a past Dobe with bone cancer, didn't remove the leg as the cancer was in the shoulder, just sent him to the Bridge to join the others.............

my lab was diagnosed with cancer when he was 6. The universities (wi. or il) didnt have the equipment to treat him so we had to take him to a larger vet with the equipment. He is almost 11 now and my wife has never told me what it actually cost, however im happy he is still around. He been a heck of a good dog.

Sorry to here about Hailey.
From experience, with a similar protocol, I can tell you ..
My Bullet (Black Lab Female 4yrs old) was diagnosed locally, Biopsy immediately sent to UW Madison to confirm. Large Cell Lymphoma.

She seemed ok during the early diagnosis stage. I first noticed her neck lymphs were swollen, geez I died when I felt that. 2 - 3 days before her Vet and I decided to try chemo she was going downhill really quickly, lethargic, and appetite loss.

Now .. my experience .. After the 1st Round of Chemo was administered, Bullet had bounced back to just about 100% within 2 days ! I remember I rejoiced, that a miracle had taken place Hail Vincristine ! It was awesome. A couple days before I thought I was losing her and then 2 days later after the 1st treatment, if you didn't know she had cancer you could not even tell anything was wrong.

Prior to that, during the diagnosis period .. Prednisone did a pretty good job, and then it didn't.

We enjoyed the Remission period we were given as a gift. The quality of life that was restored for that period was definitely worth it in her case.
I struggled with the decision to treat or not to treat given the expense, and time, but She was My Girl ... I owed it to her. My Vet who is a Saint, loved Bullet and helped me with the decision, and treated her for only the cost of the medication.

If I am ever faced with that decision to treat or not and am financially able, I would Absolutely Do it again ! The Benefit by far outweighed the risk. The remission period, even though there were some bad days ... the majority in Bullets case were good to very good. Priceless.

Dogs are Mans Best Friend. What a Freakin' Understatment.

lvr, keep us posted on the treatment! I asked my father who has been a practicing vet for 40 years about this. Not knowing all the specifics, he basically stated if your animal is being treated by the University of Wisconsin you have some of the best care you can get. I wish you and Hailey luck!
