Can you guys explain why in the northern section of the state that has historically received good yearly lake effect snow, have no trail system with the exception of the south bend area. makes no sense. We get much less snow in No. Il, but have pretty decent trail network. East of Gary to the Michigan state line is mostly sparsly populated and looks like it would work. Your thoughts?
I would be up for that for sure. I usually drop at Four Winds Casino in Mi at exit #1 in New Buffalo and start at the trail head there. Not a great trail system but it is only 35 minutes away and it gets the urge out of me for a few days. But I will ride anywhere. Count me in!! Our group is also doin Our backpack trip last week of January if anyone wants to tag along. We are doing St. Ignace, Drummond Island, Sault St. Marie, Christmas, Escanaba, Manistique and back to St. Ignace. Ride to a different town each night. Let me Know if anyone is interested.
How many miles of trail do you have access to when you start in New Buffalo off Exit #1? Good enough for an afternoon or a full day?
Well, We rode Monday from New Buffalo Mi., to Tree Oaks Mi., To Galein Mi., to South Bend In. then headed back. Total of 76 miles on a Mon. night. Not too bad, gas station and food stops in each town. The convenience factor is there and you could spend an entire day. Not sure that club owns a groomer so its nothing compared to the regular state trail systems. I really go because it's so close. If you go to exit 4 and head to Niles its muuuuuch better and groomed. Thats about an hour and fifteen minutes form Valparaiso In. I've taken the Niles Mi. trail to South Haven Mi. and spent the night and headed back the next day. I try to go all over the country and have to say West Yellowstone is my favorite with the Northshore of Minnesota a close second. Minocua Wi. area probably third.

You said the Northshore of Minn is a close 2nd....I haven't ridden that area before. Where do you stay up there? What's the riding like? I've ridden mostly around the UP or Northern Wisconsin, and loved it, although my favorite two trips were to Wyoming and Quebec.
Well, We did a full backpack trip staying in a different town each night about 100-130 miles by trail each day. Started in Two Harbors Mn. just north of Duluth Mn. at the Two Harbors Resort. Day 2 we rode to Biwabik Mn. and stayed at Giants Ridge Resort. Day 3 we Rode to Ely Mn. and stayed at Grand Ely Lodge. Day 4 we rode to Silver city and stayed at Americinn. Day 5 we road to Grand Marais Mn. and stayed at Devil Track Lodge. Zero Traffic the entire trip. Hilly, winding groomed trails the entire way. The northshore trail system, Taconite trail and Gunflint trail system are incredible. The accomodations are top notch resorts with the exclusion of Americinn which is average. Nice people in all the towns. The trails stay great due to low traffic and being so wooded. We may go back the last week of January if you wanna tag along. We have 8 in the group so far. I have been everywhere in the U.P, Lower Michigan and Wisconssin and nothing comes close.
We rode in MN once, but we started off near Bemeege (don't know how to spell that). We ended up riding up to Int'l Falls and back (including riding one very long, long, boring straightaway). Trouble with that trip was it was very warm and there wasn't a whole lot of snow. I remember liking the Taconite trail, but remember a lot of straight-aways from Int'l Falls. Everybody told us we need to check out the northshore trails.
I still don't know what the plans are this year...we've talked about Wyoming but I'm a little short of funds so I would like to go somewhere I can ride my own sled and not rent....I was considering either South Dakota or the northshore in MN, so that's why I was asking about it. Where are you staying the end of Jan?
Bemidji (MN) perhaps?… we started off near Bemeege (don't know how to spell that). …
Bemidji (MN) perhaps?
Originally from Highland, now live in Fishers.
That trail to international falls is super boring. Northshore entire system is really curvy. Wyoming you can take your sled. Try Mom/s transport on this site. They transport 16 ppl and sleds for suprisingly cheap. The have a website and I think it's momstransport.com. You wont be dissapointed with the Northshore. I drivefrom Valparaiso and drop in Two Harbors. Mn and it takes about 10 hours but worth it. We are either doing the same backpack trip as stated above, or doing another eastern U.P. backpack (St ignace, Dummond island, Sault St. Marie, Munising, Escanaba, Manistique then back to St Ignace Mi.) It all depends on the white stuff. Where are you located? Our group is mostly newer sleds, age group 25-50, all different personalities.
