Anybody been to Dubois, WY?

Anybody?

Guy in one of the clubs I belong to says it's a great place for mainly trail riding. Some off trail..."bowls" kinda stuff if one is so inclined. But he raved about the trails and the options of where one can go.

Thoughts? Pro's or con's?

We drive through it to get to tog, and every time we have, there was no snow in Dubois, at least not enough to ride from town on. These trips have all been in march though.

Yeah we drive through Dubois going to Tog in Late January and not enough snow to ride. Better off driving a little farther to Tog.

I think sometimes the term "Dubois" gets used to describe more than just the town itself. The previous posts are right, Dubois is not a place that gets much snow. It is low in elevation and on the downwind side of the Wind River Range (mountains that make up the continental divide riding area, including Togwotee). It is a desert climate, much like Laramie and other places not in the mountains of WY.

I believe that places like Lava Mountain Lodge and Crooked Creek have a Dubois address and might be what is referred to as "riding out of Dubois". Or if they truly are staying in Dubois, then they are for sure trailering west 10 miles or so until you hit the snow. Sometimes folks will even say I am going to Dubois when they are going to Togwotee.

In what ever case, I would not plan on being able to stay and ride right from Dubois. Check out the other lodging facilities west of there as you head up towards and/or over Togwotee Pass on Hwy 287.

I will ask him where he stayed.

What about the trail riding in the areas mentioned above? I really have no interest in off trail riding. Sure I might go off in a field a little bit and hope I don't get stuck.

Trails is what I'm going to be riding on.

They have some great trails. But, don't expect them to be marked like here in the midwest.

There is a trail system just like every where else, marked and groomed.
Most people go out on the trails then hop off and start to poke around for the fresh untouched snow to play in.
You do not have to have a mountain sled if you just want to trail ride.
If you stay at Crooked Creek you can ride right out from your cabin, and yes you can do that at Lava or Tog.
I think you can check out the trail maps online if you do a search.

If you enjoy trail riding, which I do, you'll have a great time there. But yes, you'll have to go up the hill from there to ride. Last time we rode out there there was no snow in Dubois but tons up the hill. We rented sleds out there but no reason you couldn't ride trail sleds on the trails.

For what its worth you may have an interest in checking out the albany, wy area. Just west of laramie and higher in elevation, which means more snow or means a lot of snow vs no snow. Its in the medicine bow mountain area. We went there
Last january 3. Plenty of trails to ride and plenty of places
To play off trail. Whatever you like. Elevations ranged from 7500
At albany lodge to 10,800 and higher. But the highest elevation we were at on trails was 10,800 but you wouldnt have ever realized it. I rode
My '13 switchback 600 136" and had a blast. Only had to change clutch weights.
Snow was only 35-40" but it was fun. I would look into it atleast. Check out albany lodge for info/links.

Thanks for all the replies and info guys! Ezra - I understand what you're sayin' but it would be something different plus a place that actually HAS snow!

I"ve been going since 2000 and the trails intersections have always been well marked. There is a map telling you which intercection you're at and usually one of the first markers on the trail you've chose has a trail # on it so you can be sure which one you're on. A mountain sled is fun to have but you don't need one to ride the trails. Trails are well groomed for the most part and there is scenery you will not believe. The trip is well worth it for anyone who enjoys riding. Calibrate your clutching, carb (if not already fuel Injected and gearing if ness you will want to go every year. With that said all the stand up riders with motocross helmets and backpacks full of garden tools go ahead and light me up. LOL its an awesome place to ride

Lol, Dubois has never had more then a dusting the last 10 times I been through there. Stay at Crooked Creek if you want trails. (Some call that Dubois ). If you stay in town you will be trailering up the mountain each day.

Ya, there's no doubt you'll need a new set of slides if you ride right from town. What's the story with lava mtn? Heard it was sold?

That's news to me? Getting out of lava to the trails can be all over the spectrum. They are constantly working at making it easier to get in anD out of. For the most part I ride the side of the road up to the road/trail that goes to Brookes lake lodge area. Then the trails are only used as a way point from there.
