the biggest 24 hour snowfall that I can remember in the u.p was was Indy was still in diapers. We had lake effect that was coming down like I've never seen before, we woke up in the morning and it was above the screens on the door. If I recall it was somewhere around 50 inches. You think that would be great-nope quite the opposite. It was horrible. That snow was so light and fluffy that if you sneezed, you opened up a path to walk. The lead sled kept dying because the snow getting in the engine compartment. We only made it about 5 miles, had to turn around go back to camp and get duct tape and duct tape the front of the sleds up. The snow was so light you could not even attempt to get on top of it. The groomers were out just running the tuckers with no drag behind. But when the Sun came out, the snow shrunk to about 12 inches.
I also remember a time being at the top of Mount Bohemia, studying a path to take going down, when I broke through the crust of snow that I was walking on and fell neck deep into snow . What stopped me was my out reached arms. ? My feet were still not on solid ground.
