Areas to see in Western U.P.

Going to be staying in Rockland at the end of Feb. This will be the first time that any in my group have ever rode anything west of Big Bay/Michigamy area. Would like to hear some spot to stop and see. We are going to be riding 4 days so planning on riding west to Porcupines', North into the Keweenaw, South around Gogebic and maybe even Watersmeet area. Not planning on doing supper hard days, more so 200 miles roughly. Keweenaw day would probably be the hardest day. Would like to make it to the tip but not that important. Places we are looking to stop and site see would be areas of course that we can ride the sleds to and not have to walk a mile to see if you know what I mean.

Also areas for gas but more important areas to watch out for to make sure we have enough gas to get to the next spot. I hear of stations in different locations that are closed and want to make sure we can get at least 100 miles or less between fuel stops.

Places to eat would be nice also. Spent many years dealing with the southern Krupp's so of course will plan on stopping at the northern Krupp's to get a pasty…lol

I would go to the tip and get to copper harbor. If it is a clear day the sights up on Brockway Mtn are pretty cool. lake in the clouds is a good spot to hit. The fredda loop is a cool trail to hit north of South range and north of Winona it is 120 & 121, it is a loop that is fast and twisty.
I am sure other people will have a lot more places!

Lake in the Clouds is pretty cool, bar called "Porky's" I think nearby in Silver City for grub and refreshments. The mobile in Berglund is open again so when in Gogebic area, you can fuel there. In Gogebic, Fish Tales and Hoop and Hollar are good spots, great dinner at Root Cellar. Bergland Bay Bar is also a great place for fellow sled heads:) We'll be based in Gogebic, hoping to make it near Keweenaw one day, any loops from Gogebic up toward Keweenaw/Copper Harbor/Houghton would be appreciated.

Lake Gogebic is fun with several places to eat and whatever. And then only 30 something miles north of there is the Porkies which are a must see if in the area. I have a couple waterfalls im going to show some friends in the far western area of Ironwood and Bessemer. On your way up to the Keweenaw see if Lenny in Greeland would show you around a bit if he can.

I would not write off the tip of the Keweenaw either, and by that I mean the very tip. There is a groomed trail that will take you right to the very tip (High Rock). About as unique a spot as you will ever find riding in the Midwest, perhaps the US. Surrounded on three sides by the inland sea that is Lake Superior is pretty humbling- in my opinion. There is awesome snow all the way to the tip this year, which is not always the case.

Brockway Mtn is also a very cool experience with good weather, but if you are going to the Porkies and do the Lake of the Clouds trail, it will be a similar experience. Copper Harbor is also a very neat town to visit- especially in the winter. Will remind you very much of "Cicely" Alaska- the show Northern Exposure was suppose to take place in.

The Firesteel Trestles on trail 3 between Mass City and Twin Lakes are also a unique experience. That's my 2 cents!

Been to Cooper Harbor a few times and never went to the very tip. Wish I had now...

We went this past saturday morning and we were the first group down a majority of the trails including the high rock trail. It's a pretty amazing spot and worth the few mile ride from Copper Harbor.

We've done a number of loops including the following this past weekend: From Bergland, we took 13N toward Rockland, stayed on 13N to Greenland and ultimately it dumps you right into Twin Lakes and trail 3. Trail 3 up to the Mosquito for lunch and continue on 3 thru towards Houghton. You can take the Freda Loop and then head back down or do like we did and continue up to Copper Harbor (stopping in Gay) and grab a couple of rooms.

Another ride we did around Gogebic (wanted to stay close so we could watch the playoffs back at our cabin) was take 13S (east side of the lake) down to 2. West on 2 then north on 1. Ran 1 all the way to White Pine and the Konteka. Ran up towards lake of the clouds. Jumped on 11S (South Boundary Rd) to 102 which dumps you back at 8/1 in the Bergland area.

All trails were great...little bumpy going into Rockland but not nearly as bad as it's been in years past...didn't see any rocks either!

Sounds good, I thought 11S was closed, can you confirm it is open?
Thanks!

.

What do you think the trail mileage would be from Greenland to High Rock (Tip) headed up Trail 3 through Houghton ??
Just wondering if a couple normal trail riders can make it there and back to Greenland by late afternoon.

We will be looking for the most direct efficient route, which brings a couple of questions,
1. Once we cross the bridge to Hancock should we then take 17 up to Calumet to pick up 3 again OR Take a Right and get on 3 right there at the split in HC ?
Once in Calumet it looks like 3 all the way to 134 to High Rock.
2. On the way back to Greenland should we just take the same route we took up, or head through LacLaBelle, Gay , Lake Linden ?

Not wanting to add a bunch more miles to a pretty good day.
