Around superior bag trip

I rode with a group of guys for about 25 years, the group fluctuated between 5 and 7 of us for most of that time, as we got older, the group grew, my wife started riding, friends started inviting friends, different riding styles, desires to stop and directions to go after a while and at times became a cluster and our group literally split three ways. Well... one of the original group has suggested a reunion ride of the original 5 of us and brought up a circle tour bag trip around lake superior. This year will be hopefully (weather allowing) my first time ever doing a bag trip, I actually have 2 of them booked and I will be doing with venturenorth, I am very much looking forward to it as it has always been on my bucket list of things to do and I feel I am doing it with the bag trip master himself. Has anyone else ever done a superior bag trip? besides weather conditions... the good? the bad? approximate time duration if not riding like a snow cross racer? Thanks guys!

Second week in February 1986...Eagle River, Wi to Thunder Bay, On...Roundtrip 7 days/1300 mi...5 guys...All Yammies...Worst part of the trip was when we crossed the St Louis River between Superior, Wi and Duluth, Mn...We were told by locals it was safe, but there were no tracks...It went well, but was a tense ride across...Everything else went smooth...Biggest point I would make is to never pass up a gas station...

that was my thought too , a ride through duluth will make it alot easer

There's a good trail system from Superior to Duluth but it's a long route around. You end up out west of Duluth in Carlton and then can start heading east from there. I've heard there's not much for trails between Grand Portage, MN and Thunder Bay.

There are no longer ANY trails between Marathon and Kakabeka Falls, ON (about 200+ miles). We did this ride in 1996. It was tough then. 1758 miles Pelican Lake WI to Pelican Lake with no support vehicle and no GPS. 7 1/2 days. Canada is great riding, but it makes the U.P. seem like you're in the city.

After November 1st you can go to OFSC.ON.CA to see Ontario trails EDit well trail guide is not up yet on November 5

I think you'd have to coordinate with some people locally to figure out where you can get through the closed areas and where you'd need to get someone to get you with a trailer. Those trails are went away after the 08 financial/housing crash and I think the clubs folded too. At least they seem solid over to marathon again as of the past few years.

This trip is definitely a bucket list item for me but who knows if it will open again. Need a string of solid winters and for rural Canada to get free of the WEF commies bringing everything down.

this is all great information guys and luckily not something we were going to do this year as it sounds like there is much to think about and consider. "Canada is great riding but makes the U.P. seem like you are in the city" quote: bzboats. And that there is why I love the U.P. so much! almost 30 years of riding there, never tire of the scenery, the feel, the people and our favorite stops, and understand they will be farther and fewer in between in Canada.

BZBoats- Back in the day I seem to remember that the snowmobile trail from Marathon to ThunderBay was impassable(too much snow) and your group took the cement trail instead. Those were the days!

between you and Hoosier, rethinking the round superior trip and possibly just a Canada trip, coordination like what Hoosier talking about and running the concrete trail I have no interest in doing or coordinating, I GREATLY appreciate the input! this is why I asked, will still keep it in my bucket list though. Thank you everyone again!

Sounds good. I didn't ride from my place for two years now. two years ago we went out to west yellowstone and didn't ride again that year and last year was a bust. So it's been three seasons since we rode locally and I think we will ride the local favorites. 2026 sounds like a possibility for sure.

Same here I want to ride our local routes been too long with bust last year.

Thanks for the heads up. I originally wanted to take the train to Wawa but heard they stopped that some time ago.
I was going to head out solo but the wife and riding buddies won’t let me yet nobody will go 💁.
