It is finally happening! All thanks to congress and the new first responder cell phone network being built out by ATT.

They are upgrading all of the existing towers and adding 26 new towers in the UP.
I know ATT is meeting a land owner today south of FFH13 to go over details for the site they have chosen down there for a new tower.

I also heard when they are up on towers upgrading the equipment, they are also staging 5g.

I have a firstnet phone and plan because I was an ATT customer already. Every one up here has verizon because they have better coverage in the area. This is all about to change. Every one ATT will benefit from this build out. Mandated delivery dates for rural coverage have to be met. It seems they are ahead of schedule. It will be so nice to have reception.

How long before we all have sat phones and all of these towers will be obsolete?

Satellite is getting closer. SpaceX is moving forward with starlink. Low orbit satellites for internet - data.
receivers are currently the size of an average pizza box. Nothing small enough for a hand held device yet as far as I have seen.
But it has to be part of the longer term plan.

for your average metro dweller the old phone lines will be the fastest cheapest rout for at least the next decade
