atv/utv riding in the u.p.

for those of you that ride/have ridden or have knowledge,when is a good time
to ride? mostly concerned with bugs. would likely base out of the bergland
area and ride a couple days. any advice would be appreciated.

Our buggy season is typically June. I personally like going out in May, its not too warm, not too dry, can be a little muddy but thats the fun part If you want to come to the Keweenaw you do have to be escorted across the lift bridge by the police and they have certain times. Its a blast ATV/UTV riding up here!!

Have to have safety training. Can be from your home State. MI now offers theirs online, so the kids can take it that way if they don't have something already.

Thanks for the reply.The dnr site says helmets are required, correct? I assume you can purchase "trail permits" at various locations like you can for snowmobile?
Trying to talk the family into coming up to enjoy what we do during the winter.

Yes ORV permits available anywhere SNOW permits are sold.

When will the trails open, or are they now? Thinking of coming up the first weekend in April if they are.

Bugs are usually pretty bad in mid to late May when I have been there. If you stop make sure it is in an open sunny area and not the woods or where there is low areas you will be swarmed on.

If you have a roll cage and seatbelt you do not need a helmet.
