Bad Drive Bearings

Dear John Dee and others:

I recently ran into some major problems. My drive bearings went bad, I did grease everything this off season but have only owned the sled for one year. This would be my second winter owning the sled. While towing a sled back, my drive shaft ended up spinning into and gashing a 2 inch hole in my tunnel. I will need new drive bearings, drive shaft, also idler wheel. Not sure what the best route with the tunnel is. The sled is a 2003 polaris pro x 700 with around 3300 miles on it. Wondering what the best idea to do with the sled. Torn on either taking it to a place like King Blunders in Fort Atkinson. Having a polaris dealer fix it. Finding a part out chassis or shell of a sled and fixing it myself. Parting out the sled myself. Or selling wholesale for a trade in. Please send me any input.

Sounds like a new tunnel would be your best bet. If you plan on parting it out I might be interested for the right price. Taking it to the dealer to replace a tunnel is a $ pit, probably going to be $1k just for labor.

Usually when that happens the driveshaft eats the 2 flanges that hold the bearing and slots the chassis - but it doesn't damage the 3 mounting holes for the flanges. IF the holes are still there I just picked up a piece of aluminum the same thickness as the chassis and cut it to fit the area that got slotted. Bring it to a welding shop and havw it welded in. Use a Dremel to grind the welds flush and your ready to install the new driveshaft and bearings. You can usually find a used driveshaft on Ebay cheaper than buying from Polaris

working on an01 xc 600 right now. same thing happend. did exactly what superski discribed in the previous. I used a di grinder with a 2'' flap discs to blend out the welds. Aluminum will plug up your grinding disc so pick up a few of them. pretty cheap fix this way considering the only other option is a new tunnel. F that, have it welded.
