Barefoot Charlies Land O' Lakes

Anyone here old enough to remember this joint?
My folks and grandparents do and was told it was the place to be. I just recall seeing a postcard at the Gateway Lodge with this odd character named Charlie. He must have spent thousands of hours building that place.

I've heard of it, but never saw it. I've been staying at the Gateway for over 20 years and have learned a lot about Land O' Lakes. This book looks really cool. I have to get it.

looking through that book I was surprised to see Archdale's(Merrill Inn) burned down in 88...I swore it burned down in the mid 90s.

I remember it and when it burnt down. Bearfoot is still around and runs/owns the marina in phelps.

Not so. Barefoot (Charlie Haase) died in the '70's. Deto, who runs the Barefoots Marina in Phelps was "Barefoots" (Not "Bearfoot") partner and owned (owns) the property where Barefoot Charlies Nightclub stood.

Here is a well written biography with pictures of who barefoot actually was → https://ahcuah.wordpress.com/2012/07/24/colorful-characters-barefoot-charlie-haase/

After reading this you will understand the difference betwen "Bear" & "Bare" ;-)

I'm with you. I was born in '87 and remember being in there with my grandparents, so it had to have been in the mid 90's. Maybe it burned in '88, but didn't burn down until the mid 90's.

Hi Magnumb,
I sent you a private message a few days ago. Would you please take a look at it? Thanks.

Some additional things I've run across in my search of Land O' history that some might find interesting

Phillip W. Archdale Obituary

Phillip W. Archdale, aka Dad, Papa, Philly the Kidd, and friend was born in Waukegan Illinois September 30th, 1938, and after battling heart disease passed away on October 22nd 2021 at the age of 83. Phil graduated from Waukegan High School and attended Marquette University in Milwaukee. Phil was the son of Ted and Gen Archdale and along with his uncle George, owned the bar and restaurant named Archdale’s in Waukegan Illinois where Phil started his journey spreading smiles in the hospitality industry. In 1946, Ted and Gen opened Ted’s Sandy Beach Resort in Land O’ Lakes Wisconsin. Phil and family, including wife Elaine and 3 children; Kathy, Ted, and Tammy joined them in northern Wisconsin and opened the upscale Archdale’s North Supper Club in 1970.

Phil’s kind hearted, generous nature will be missed by all who knew him. As Phil’s friends knew, his passion for shooting, fishing, hunting, and the great outdoors always kept him smiling. For the past 25 years, his snow bird activity between Land O’ Lakes Wisconsin and Mesa Arizona with partner Judy Novak, allowed him the weather to enjoy his hobbies and time with friends all year round. Friends of Phil were often greeted for happy hour, where Phil’s famous Manhattans, Red Dog beer, and Blackberry Brandy (tea) flowed in abundance.

We used to go there when we were in late teens early 20’s. Used to have great bands and huge party’s. Barefoots was the place back in the day!
