Hey ya'll,

We have booked a place in Chassell to our home base for riding. 5 days :)

Any suggestions on rides? We know the north run has lots of choices.

Is there any trail at all south towards Baraga?

heard that one was close through the cranberry fields.

tx in advance.

lol...don't let these debbie downers poo-poo your trip
Not trying to be a Debbie downer just trying to help. Can’t get north to houghton or south range from chassell either by sled unless you want to ride ditches for 10 miles.

Chassell is not a good place to base out of, no trails connect directly to town.

There used to be though. I'm talking back in the early 2000s. What happened to those trails?

Landowners closed them down.

Chassell is hard to get out of on a sled. Portage lake will be your only option and unless you are on the lake it's hard to get onto too.

Sketchy ice this year.

I thought the dreamland trails were open for business?? Wouldn't that get you in and out of chassel??

Hay TX again all !!!

We believe we can travel just a bit west to catch the Bill Nickels trail and Nord er south from Painesdale.

Was gonna ask if the lake was good enough for sled travel.?

Thought to the was a local trail along the westside of the lake and as you got to the north end you made the cross up in there.

TX again.

like the notes.

Crying shame how isolated Chassel has become. I never thought the residents would prevail closing off a public trail especially after judge told them to open up and stop the blocking. I never did hear the formal end to that trail other than it became cost prohibitive to remove the blockage. Anyone know the facts how the trail was closed legally?

I don't think it was ever legally closed, people just stopped trying to fight it.

What sucks is the landowners do not own any part of the trail but they built sheds and things right over it. A old business associate of mine has a horse shoe pit on it. When my mountain biking group took that trail from Houghton to Chassell we got all kinds of guff from people yelling at us. When I told my bud about who someone could impale themselves on his rebar horseshoe dealio we was mad as heck. He got even more mad when I told him that he didn't own that part of his yard.

Edit: and now that there are a few washouts from the Fathers Day Flood I'm sure it's going to remain like that forever.

That trail or easement will never go away. Buried is a main AT&T Fiber and prob a few other utilities.

Not starting anything easements for utilities do not mean anyone can go through that area. With that said if the easement includes a trail then yes it’s legal to cross but if only utility easement then that is all a land owner has to let through.

there is trail 15 that goes to Baraga from Chassel but no north or west trails. on a cold year you could ride Portage Lake ice but i wouldn't this year. If you must stay in Chassel trailering out of there is good advise.
