Bergland/Gogebic area

Drove to the Porkies yesterday, Hwy 45N to BC then 28W to Bergland then 64N to Silver City. As viewed from the road, snow cover was about the same everywhere except the last few miles near the lake where snow cover dropped way off (lots of grass showing in Silver City). Trails showed lots of snirt & gravel at road crossings. Really couldn't see much of the trail along M28 because the grade is elevated above road level. Heading N along 64 near White Pine, the main trail looked OK with the usual "I can't stay on the trail need to zigzag all over the ditch" crap. Near Silver City, trail is on E side of road & has a huge wet sled eating spot - use caution.

Returned via Ontonagon to Hwy 45S. Snow cover increases quickly as you head away from lake. Rockland had the most snow on the ground.

As for new snow yesterday, maybe a dusting to 1 inch depending on where you were.

Headed out from Watersmeet Friday morning going to Copper Harbor east on 8, north on 3, 105, 107 up to Kenton/Sidnaw, then 109 up to the 12 turnoff. Pleasantly surprised how good the conditions were. 109 north from 12 was brutal for the first 12 miles, Baraga groomers not to be found since the warmup last weekend. Once in Superior's grooming area, they did a good job the last 10 miles into trail 3 by twin lakes. 3 was ok to Houghton, got advice to take 17 and it was great to Calumet. From there brutal all they way to Copper Harbor. I saw more sleds on that stretch than I have ever seen in the UP even on weekends. Had a crazy time with a bunch nut bags from Southern Minnesota. You guys rock! Saturday moring we were first tracks all the way to Hancock, 10+ conditions. Followed 3 all the way back to Watermeet, then on to Rogers Bar and dropped down to Bents Camp for dinner and back. Overall good riding with a couple of tough stretches, 400 miles total with only 50 miles of tough riding. I was surprised how few riders we saw on Saturday. Very glad we went!

How were the Watersmeet conditions? Mostly the grade coming into and out of Watersmeet, and heading north towards Bruces Crossing?

thanks.

Weird cuz so far this season I've been saying "Man this is the best I've ever seen the trails around Bergland"
Please do tell us the area your grooming so I can also ride on the Unicorn trail...

Just got back, it was the worst I've ever seen, and it has nothing to do with grooming. You can't groom when there are creeks overflowing onto the trails. Thought I saw a beaver swim across 102, it was that bad in spots. I was told there is a wash out on trail 1 south of the lodge that could be deadly. Offtrail is not an option, we need snow. On sat we thought let's head north up 13 maybe it's better. Nope we quit and took 100 up to 12 back west to whitepine. 12 to whitepine looked like it was hit by a tornado. More dirt then snow, lots of water. Western up needs cold and snow

Sitting at the Konteka right now having breakfast. 1 north out of Berglund was freshly groomed and we were the first ones over. It's much better today and 12 is freshly groomed go Ontonagan so heading that way next.

Same here....the lake is a mess. 13 out of town sucked. 1 coming in was ok....groomer went through likely an hour earlier and a little traffic roughed them up a bit. Lack of snow more than anything else. Didn't go south as I've heard the rumors.

Stopped at the Whoop for lunch at about 1:00 and they said they had only seen 4 sleds all day. The bartender said that that the grooming situation is a mess and that they are all fighting....just fires the mechanic. The guy who I think owns the place helps run the Gogebic Groomers Inc. Is how she said she knows.

As said above, 1N out of Bergland was freshly groomed and we were first over. 12 to Ontonagon was very smooth and freshly groomed, but thin as you get closer to town. 12 to Greenland was very good and the big water spot was easily passable. Stopped at Pat's for gas and accessories and then down to Henry's, again, nice and smooth. We had heard 13 on the Bergland side was bad so we took 3 south to Bruce Crossing, and that was good also. 8 back to Bergland was a bit choppy.

Overall a good day of riding, but a bit more snow is needed.
