We have been going to the Bighorns for years now and we have settled on the northern horns as far as the best riding. The southern system has very nice trails and play areas but not quite the elevation of the north. There is very limited lodging in the south since Meadowlark Lake Resort closed down. There is a place called Deer Haven to stay but we always stayed at Meadowlark when we went there. Both trail systems connect through the Paint Rock Canyon trail. The south grooms up to the canyon on their side and the north grooms down to the canyon from their side. There is about 7 miles of ungroomed riding (some sidehilling) down throught the canyon on a well marked but ungroomable trail. We used to stay in the south for 3 days and then backpack up to the north for three days and at that time there was about 35 miles of ungroomed trail, but they have since opened up the system to more grooming. From Bear lodge the canyon is about 55 miles by trail, and if you decide to go all the way down through the canyon we were told you can get gas at Meadowlark 24/7. We did not go all the way through this year to confirm this. Just ask in advance. We found the best play areas down past Snowshoe lodge, huge meadows with large rolling hills, cornices, and plenty of high marking oportunities. If you go west out of the lodge on 14 follow it down past medicine wheel and you will find more huge play areas on both sides of the trail. Also that way is Bucking Mule Falls lookout with its spectacular veiws, a must to see. Loop around to High Country lodge and you will find more play areas than you have gas in your tank. Want more? Run up to Freeze Out Point and play in the meadows and hills on each side of the trail. There are millions of acres to play in the Bighorns. Thats why we always go back.......to us, the best kept secret in the west......ah nuts, I just let the cat outa the bag. Have fun out there and be safe......
