TRAVERSE CITY -- When Robin Tallman looked out her front window Wednesday morning, she did not expect to see a 200 pound Black Bear.

“I let my dog back in and got my second cup of coffee…then there was a bear sitting in my yard between the driveway and the road,” Tallman said.

Tallman lives at the end of Plainview Road, where the bear spent hours hiding in a tree.

“I’m use to watching squirrels and chipmunks, and this isn’t your average friend to befriend in the Animal Kingdom,” said neighbor Marc Garczynski.

More than 100 people showed up to get a glimpse of the bear. Officials made sure that the spectators maintained a safe distance from the wild animal.

Shortly after 11 a.m., the bear was shot with a tranquilizer dart. After a short foot pursuit, the bear was placed inside a cage.

Wednesday afternoon, a conservation officer with the DNRE took the bear to northern Missaukee County to be released back into the wild. It is DNRE policy to take a bear at least 50 miles away from the problem area where it is found.

Cool picture. About two years ago we had let our westie outside and she started barking like crazy (which she never does). By the time my wife and I got to the window to see what was going on she had chased a little cub out of our yard and into a tree. My wife and I looked at each other and said, "if only our dog knew how stupid that was to be chasing a bear". Then I brought her in right away thinking that the mother can't be too far away. Since that time we never saw the bear again.

You will not think it is so cool when the bear is in your yard pulling down your bird feeders and tipping over the trash. My parents thought it was so neat to have them around until one bear climbed the cedar deck post to get up to the bird feeders. It made one He!! of a mess and ripped up the cedar like the tip of a chainsaw blade.

They have moved a lot further south in recent years!

Stick an 8' 4"x4" a couple feet in the ground, and smear the top 12"-18" with peanut butter and then they have something to eat and play with:

We have one bird feeder that is not super close to the house, and one garbage can. To me it wouldn't be a big deal if they rip the bird feeder down, birds can find food on their own. Occasionally we get a coon who gets into the garbage can. Yep, have to pick up some garbage sometimes. So, I still think it is cool!:)

Thats just what I want in my yard everynight looking for peanut butter!!!! NOT!!!! They are neat to look at but I wouldn't want them with in a mile of a house or cabin. Watch the Discovery Channel on Alaska's bear population and how they(DNR) are killing more and more bears because they have found a meal plan called "City limits". Sorry but think they belong way out in the woods.

Over the course of 10 years that I owned a cabin, they never ONCE did anything destructive to the place. Not anything, besides finish off the wifies pretty little bird feeders that I warned her would last a week every time she bought one. She learned quickly the "post and board" feeders were the easiest to put up, the cheapest to put up, easiest to fix, and could care less when they wrecked them.

Edit: Oh yeah, that post was 10 feet outside the slider door of the cabin, I took that picture with the door OPEN.

Bunch of wimps, don't have food out or mess with them or the cubs and they could care less about you. And Grizzly and black bear should not be in the same discussion.

Look at the WI DNR website the whole upper half of the state they are abundent.

all in the wild... all about trust.

Exactly! It took me a whole summer to get the pics I got, during the day! As you can see, there are only 2 cubs in the pic, she had a 3rd up until the week before I took that one. Not sure what happened to the 3rd cub, I suspect the wolves finally got one...... I have another pic of one of the cubs walking up to me and sniffing my leg with the door open, all while the mom was busy on the post.

The bears wreak havoc on hummingbird feeders, but it is cool to see the teeth marks punched into the plastic.

Actually, we live in their "woods"! We made it our yards, and continue to doo so! my opinion, they have more rights in our yards than we doo! We just have to be careful of them and all will be fine. Sure sometimes something bad will happen, that's life. We must deal with it. We must get off the notion that we can save everyone all the time, it's just not going to happen!

You are so right that we live in "their woods". "Their woods" didn't have bird feeders, gardens, trash can, outdoor grills, and peanut butter before "we" showed up so we shouldn't have it while we are using "their woods". Don't get me wrong, I love the outdoors but we have to respect it to the benefit of the creatures who own it. What happens when a bear gets shot because it was tearing bird feeders down in a neighborhood? Or worse yet, gets killed for continually coming back into someones yard who has children. We can't save everyone all of the time but we sure can use some forethought in our actions to save the innocent (children, pets, and the bears themselves)! While they are awesome creatures I don't believe bears are "FUN" animals to have around people and we have to be the intelligent beings to protect everyone involved.
