Black Bears

You are so right that we live in "their woods". "Their woods" didn't have bird feeders, gardens, trash can, outdoor grills, and peanut butter before "we" showed up so we shouldn't have it while we are using "their woods". Don't get me wrong, I love the outdoors but we have to respect it to the benefit of the creatures who own it. What happens when a bear gets shot because it was tearing bird feeders down in a neighborhood? Or worse yet, gets killed for continually coming back into someones yard who has children. We can't save everyone all of the time but we sure can use some forethought in our actions to save the innocent (children, pets, and the bears themselves)! While they are awesome creatures I don't believe bears are "FUN" animals to have around people and we have to be the intelligent beings to protect everyone involved.

True true. Try to tell that to the bear hunters dumping piles of bread and cooking oil so they can have their dogs chase them up a tree so they can see them fall to the ground when they shoot them for the mount in their family room.

Its a vicious cycle. (Did I spell that right nash?)

Guess I'm one who enjoys watching them, not shooting them. I understand the hunting doesn't take place in the suburbs, that's in the "woods" "up north".

The woods are "theirs" only if they help pay the taxes. By the way bears are cool and no problem for the bird feeders -its easy- just post "no bears allowed" signs. I've had no problem with bears since I've done that.

I thought only Yogi and BooBoo could read the signs!!! Hunting is hunting and we have the right to choose such actions unless the govt changes. I hunt, fish, and shoot for sport and recreation so I will not pass judgement on how someone legally hunts game. By the way, didn't someone find a puppy/young dog in the UP sledding up by Krupps? How is that puppy doing? That thread is one of the best things I have ever read!!!

I totally agree to hunting animals to keep their numbers in "check". Keeping them in check makes it possible for us to live together. If we would never hunt them their numbers would be outrageous!! There would be no room for us. That would cause a lot of conflict. So, we need hunting, just not too much to where we start to eliminate them!!

If I read it right, the original owners eventually got in contact with the guy that found it, and it was returned safe and sound! Yes, cool story. Someone correct me if I miss read that.

My buddy Ridesafe is the one who took the dog home, and he still has her. (Boonie) The original owner and my bud did talk, and the original owner said if the dog was in a good home, then my buddy could keep her. So he did. She is doing well.

I'm not a hunter, but I agree hunting is necessary. However, having dogs chase a bear up a tree and to just stand there and shoot them is anything BUT hunting! I'm not sure how bear hunters consider that "sport" as the hunted should at least have a chance to survive. I have absolutely no respect for anyone that hunts like that!

After all it is all about us. I suspect hunting a few neighbors to keep them in check would work too! After all our numbers are also outrageous!

That is how we operate and have throughout history, like it or lump it. Whether its bears, wolves, lions, tigers Indians, Germans, Kuwaiti's, etc... and whether we are calling it a wildlife refuge, a reservation, or a country, we divide the land how we see fit. In early America, were there not too many Indians and Kuwait too many Iraqi's right?

In our day and age there is a shift to a psychological warfare. From what is being taught in our schools to the propaganda put out by the media, effects how we think. While I agree that if a person has a home or cabin in the woods, it is best not to invite trouble, but if trouble should come, your wife, children, etc... are more important than a bear. (I know the science books and propaganda we get through the media are rock science and haven't changed for thousands of years and the ever changing bible which has probably changed 5-10 times in the past 100 years give us 2 different stories. But I still believe that we have dominion over the animals.)

Bears need territory (property) in which they can sustain themselves off of. If we keep building homes and cabins on their property and then relocating them to the middle of the forest on some other bears property, aren't they going to continue pushing out back onto our property. Doesn't it make sense that we manage that population so that conflict is avoided between people and bears? Or do you thing bears can live together in a high rise apartment out in the middle of the woods?

You might have an idea there, we've already done that with birds. Maybe bears would like it too?

Does not make it right.

back in the '80's we used to go camping at Fanny Hooe Lake, and you were able to drive into the garbage dump to see all the bears. they would come right up to your car looking for food
