blown motor

my son just blew his motor again in his 2002 polaris edge x 600!!! it only had 1500 miles on a rebuilt motor from suter's speed shop in madison. still has compression but it tightened up while running about 85mph and stopped. spark plugs look good. nice and tan. not white. im assuming crank bearings?? you can still pull it over but it pulls hard. not sure why this happened. not sure if thishas anything to do with it but he had been running out in a swamp and busting through cattails lately. we found lots of cattail fuzzys in the air box. so im assuming lots got sucked into carbs too. would this contribute??

I don't know if the cattails themselves would do any harm, but I assume if those were in there then the motor likely sucked in a fair amount of snow which could wash away lube

Air filter should have stopped the fuzz from getting into carbs. And I would think fuzz would have gummed up carb and stopped sled from running before destroying motor.

Replace it with a k&n, add 15 Hp. Better than a can

I don't run a can. Just a straight pipe. Adds 0.5 lbs and adds 16 hp.

Some old guy in the UP was Waving at me when I brap brap'd past his house all weekend two weeks ago......he musta thought it was cool.....

You have an air filter on an Indy? It's not stock if you do.

It's stock, here's pics of the warning not to run without it, and a pic of the new filter I bought for it.

He must have recognized that you are a bonafide off-trail rider and therefore beyond reproach.

Sorry to the OP for getting way off topic.

That filter is crazy. Never seen one like. If you remove you will need to fatten up the jetting is all.
Was it using oil? I have been bit before melting down to rebuilt and burn down again because I did not fix the root cause. That being the oil pump failed. (90's yamaha 600)

Hey Sweeper, off topic, but you brought it up, what year is the Mustang?
Brent

Its an '07 convertible. I bought it new but its my daughters now. That's why it has pink pinstripes added to the boss graphics. Its got sequential blinkers, and the horn neighs like a horse. Great car, great fun.

Funny, I was wondering about the Pink, I've got a Black '07 GT, I'm a Mustang guy from way back!

the other thing about a carbed motor=in the venturi there are passages(vents)that are plumbed into the bowl area on most carbs, you can get snow dust(water essentially)into the bowl via these passages. it may only be one droplet of water, but if left to freeze(usually over night) then it could plug a jet if not using deicer and then boom

sled was using plenty of oil. ended up being a rod bearing. but of course the crank needs to be redone. i havent talked to Suter's speed shop yet to find out if they actually had done the bottom end or not. my guy thats doing the motor cant tell if bottom end had been done or not.
