Taking the wife to brained MN. for her birthday mid may. I would like a room with a fireplace and a view of one of those amazing sunsets over a lake. Don't want to spend $1000 on two night but I understand motel 6 rates arnt going to get me what I want either. This is what we will be riding......

I would pick one of the resorts, Maddens, kavanaughs, etc then you will get what you want.
Will pay for that time of year, since fishing has started, but not 1000. Not much besides fishing going on then.

Kavenaughs looks pretty nice. Any experience with them. Also would like to golf. Where to the local hackers go?

I have been to both in the off season, Only time I can afford them LOL It's quiet and mostly hung out. resturants, pool etc.
Not much of a golfer but golfed 2 courses at Maddens, the 9 hole was more my speed.
Kav. 3 years ago, maddens 2 years ago, breezy point last spring.

rented cabin/cottage at all 3, no complaints all had kitchen, and fireplaces and lake views

There is also Grand View Lodge on Gull Lake. You"ll get some awesome sunsets there. I haven't stayed there but I drive by it going to the landing on Gull and I boat past it when I'm out fishing. Pretty sure they have a golf course too but you would have to drive your cart to it, , not like walking out your cabin door and teeing off.
Breezy Point isn't too bad either. Again, haven't stayed there but it's a couple miles as the crow flys from the in-laws place. At Breezy Point you could get a cabin right on the green with a hot tub on the deck. No cabins on the lake (Pelican Lake) but you could get room in the lodge on the lake.
If you have some extra time and want to drink what is likely the best coffee in the country make sure you go just up hwy 371 to the little town of Nisswa and stop in at the Stone House Coffee shop. Mike and Julie French are the very kind owners. All coffee is roasted on the premisis and it it THE BEST! Best scones in the world too.

Have fun!!
