We are planning on heading North Dec 30- Jan 2 and want to stay in the Bruce Crossing area and ride a different direction every day. Would like to make it to Copper Harbor and prolly Watersmeet for the fireworks. Any suggestions where to stay and/or ride to. We like everyone are on a budget so the less we have to pay to sleep = more riding $! :) TIA

Best bet is Running Bear Resort but need to make reservation ASAP. See JD Dir. You can ride anywhere from there with Bond Falls a must see. Lake of the Clouds a nice ride too.

Is Copper Harbor a possible there and back in a day ride from this resort?
It would be a pretty long day if you stop along the way. The extra traffic on that weekend would make it even more of a challenge. Do not know the exact miles from that direction, but it would be over 300 for the round trip. Someone down there should know the exact miles. I would give a nod to the Running Bear location. Great people and you should be able to get quite a few into a cabin.

I know it is not the exact same place but from Gogebic to Copper Harbor and back is over 320 miles. If you have really good snow and conditions you can do it in a day but if the snow or conditions are marginal it is not worth the effort. When I do it again it will be midweek at a non holiday time.

Would we be smarter to drive a little further north to Toivola area and stay there? How far east can you ride from here in a day?

Contact Linda at Running Bear she will give you the mileage to CH. To me very doable straight up trail 3. After Mass City grades & wide open trails to CH you would be slow & in the way at 60mph so miles go by fast & easy to power cruise. Not much in CH so plan gas & food call ahead if CH is your turnaround point. Take gas when you can after the bridge if you RT in same day. Also don't sell Trail 2 E-W short plenty of miles & very pretty trails but again you need to power cruise or get in way of others. You can spend a day just on 107 exploring FRs & 107 my fav trail. Funny we were thinking of staying at Running Bear Resort to get north of Phelps for CH RT so all depends on on how you ride site see or if you have seen sites & riding for the fun of riding. We always do 250 mile days so 300 not that much more IMO. 400 to 450 too much but doable. :)

miles

Bruces to Mass City 25 miles , Mass City to Houghton right arount 50 and Hpughton to Copper Harbor about 55 . So a total of about 260 round trip , give or take a few miles and like Whitedust was saying very fast and easy miles so very easy to do in a day trip even with stopping for sight seeing and soda/ lunch breaks. We have left Florence Wi. and made it to CH and back in the same day (465 miles) that was a long day though (7AM to 830 PM) but only 2 of us in group so that makes a difference too.

We have found a place to stay in Mass City. What should we see? We still want to go in all directions including Copper Harbor and Watersmeet. Thanks!

Doesn't change destination rides much just deeper in the snow belt closer to CH closer to LOC but a lot further from Watersmeet. Always will start from Trail 3 so look for loops to break up 3 Grade.

I stay in Bruce/Ewing from time to time if doing copper I would book a room in copper for the night so you can take your time up and back to play.
I stay in Denny's bunk house gogebic retreats when with a group. good for a group big open living room/bar/kitchen/gas fireplace big tv. 5 beds with out roll out or futon or 6 beds if you rent the extra room also.1/2 block of trail also 1/2 block from fuel 1 block to bar 1 block off 28. 1 thing that was very nice 1 time big Vally ford dodge jeep is 1 block away.bunk house is on the back side of a small laundromat witch is more than nice for drying gear at night and the huge hot watter heater that allows hot showers for all.think it is like 20 bucks per head per night.
