Calumet and Hecla Mine and maybe John Dee.....

I'm reading the book, "Hollowed Ground". I'm really interested in the mining history of the Keweenaw. I always thought that the Quincy Mine was the star mine up there, but have now learned the the C&H mine was . It appears that their mine property extended north to Mohawk. When John Dee lived near Mohawk there was an old mine hole/shaft on or near his property. I'm wondering if John had built on what was at one time part of the best/ most profitable mine in the U.P. Just some cool stuff I'm learning. I'd love to retire there some day and be able to explore for more of these old forgotten mines.

I love history! one of the things I enjoy about riding in the Kee is all the old mining structures, standing yet in all their glory or even the ruminants of buildings and structures. I always try to imagine what it was like back in the heydays of the mining boom up there. I was happy to hear a group of people were opening the stamping mill by Portage Lake and hope to tour it some day. Lots of history to be found up there!

Found out this summer doing genealogy research on my ggrandfather, his brother consulted with C&H for the mine. He went on to help create Georgia Tech.. Fascinating reading his correspondence with the owner of C&H.
