Can it be done in a day?

You should be able to do it. I would suggest leaving early as possible so you can take advantage of the groomed trails. I have done that trip from Peppermills in Rockland about 30 times. You just want to keep on trucking and not to make to many stops. Where are you staying in Rockland? Peppermill Rentals is a great lodging spot. Check them out!

Yea thats what I thought. I met a guy last year that told me he did it in a day But he was by himself and a seasoned rider and for me its more about sight seeing than gunning it from corner to corner. And Ezra your right I got deadlines at work do not need it when i am having fun.I was trying to save a little cash by not using our base in Rockland it would cost some $ But i will take that advice and Probably spend a night in Copper you think i should reserve a place in Copper or should we wing it O and any suggestions for a place to stay.

Mariner north is we stay usually. Nice play, great food, great massages and great scenery!
Jusy my .02 cents

if staying during the week, u should be ok to wing it here as i have never made reservations during the week. Closer to the weekend, i would make reservations.

NOT with newbies

Doable, yes. Should you? Probably not with newbies.

We did LG to CH and back in one day. It would have been a long day if we hadn't have lost the bolt that hold the ski onto one of the sleds, adding that in made it less than fully enjoyable. It is a beautiful area, take the time to enjoy it.

X2 with newbies on trail 3 you are going to get blown off very high speed trail not where I would take newbies.Once across the bridge past Hancock not a lot of places for newbies to warm up on way to CH. I would take them on loops where they can bail out back to Rockland if the day is too much for them. You can jade newbies by pushing them too hard especially if they get cold & sore or hit 17-20 mile mogul trail which is possible in that trip. Easy ride for vets not for newbies. If CH is the objective do it in 2 days with newbies.

Huh?

Just off the top of my head (and I am sure I am missing a few) :

In Calumet- Jim's, Carmilitas, Michigan House, Shute's, Randy's and if you're brave enough, places like Burger King, UP Pub and Northend Bar.

If you take the other trail, there is Candies and The Torch in Hubbell and the Loading Zone and Lakes Lounge (American Legion) in Lake Linden.

Then there is the Hut in Kearsarge, Drift Inn in Copper City, Slims and White House in Mohawk.

Then the Cliff View and Vansville in Phoenix.

The pickens get a little more slim after that with Eagle Harbor Inn and Lac La Belle being your only stops before getting to the harbor (Copper Harbor).

Not trying to pick a fight, but a lot more places to stop north of the bridge (and as far north as Phoenix) than there is south.

With all that said, I would do the ride in 2 trips. Someone new to the sport is really not going to have fun trying to make that round trip in one day. They should be able to do it, but everything will be a blur as they ride and they will likely be cold and tired by the end of the day. Not the best way to treat someone new to the sport if you ask me.

We are going on this trip with a newbie too. But our new guy is 27yrs old and is a athlete in excellent shape. And he is gung-ho about putting on miles. He also bought a brand new ski-doo XP so he will be on good equipment also. But I will make sure he understands not to ride over what he is comfy with. We plan on starting early, and can always turn back if he isnt doing well. In fact of the 4 of us going, I am the only one ever to ride in this area, and I have never been north of the Bridge on sled.

Ya know maybe we will end up doing shorter loops and stuff the first day and make sure the sleds and us are up to making that trip. We are used to putting 150-300 miles on a day in NE WI, so I would imagine the upper UP trails will be a piece of cake compared to the tight, twisty, sometimes really bumpy trails we ride. From what I understand Keenwanee County trails are generally smoother and straighter than WI trails?

You are the expert in your neighborhood for all these places to stop ,that is for sure, but we both agree tuff 1 day RT ride for newbies from Rockland. My buddie got really cold in CH area maybe 18 miles out 5 degrees F & dropping & very windy & I could not find a place to warm him up. By the time we got to CH he was freezing & bought a bunch of layers at the CH clothing store can't remember the name of the store. On the way back to the bridge I just didn't see all these opportunities to stop or gas up not that we were looking but I always try to absorb what is there just incase something happens. I''l have to pin point these locations on the map for next time.......good to know.

We stayed on Lake gogebic and our group (5) made it and back in about 12 hours. Rode steady but didn't kill our self. If it wasn't for a trail closing by gay it would have been a lot shorter. We had to back track for awhile. We also took the whole loop at the tip and stopped several times for pics. I recommend leaving early and doing it either on monday or tuesday. The trails were freshly groomed all the way up.

Great info!thanks and I think you guys are right with 2 new people to the sport my 18yr old son and his girl friend It probably would be too much at least for her .We will probably will just stay around the Rockland area .If they get bored with that we will do the Copper run but spend the night. Then i might come up later in the season with a crew and stay in Copper and do some exploring I have never been up that far north and from what I have heard and read its beautiful up there.
