I'm not sure what my point is.just remember who you are effecting by your actions. Don't forget the pore SOB that has to dive into the frozen water,to pull your but out,so your family can have a proper funeral.

With that current they probably won't be pulling you out. You'll just float on down under the ice for a ways to be found in spring......Oh well, it's much easier to dig a hole in the ground after the frost is out of the ground anyway.....

I am a member of the Bootjack Fire Department and chances are I will be one of the people coming to rescue you. Do yourself and all rescue people a favor and stay off the canal use the bridge. The canal is never safe due to a rapid current under the ice plus ice is not the same all the way across. It is a fact that the ice could be 6 inches thick where you check the thickness and about 100 ft away from there it could only be an inch thick. Just stay off of the ice and use the bridge. If your snowmobile goes through you will have a fine to pay to the DNR because it will be known about if you are crossing by the bridge.

i've been how this site most likely longer than you. when john was riding his pol-cat to be exact and living in lake linden. does it matter how long i've been on the site? it was a ridicilous comment and his actions put others at risk.

well my so called dumb *** has never went under that bridge.
and in fact has only crossed from beach to beach a few time in the yrs I have ridden up in the UP.
in fact if u must know when I ride the river by a buds home I always have a set of picks around my neck and compressed gas jacket under my coat.
have I skipped in my day yes mi and mi more times than not intentionally usually where I know it is shallow but also tons of channels around my house u have to skip and every one dose it.
good Idea to go under the lift bridge no not really never done it my but I don't sit on a high horse and look down my nose at people nose.
Y really think preaching at your key board is going to stop anyone from doing any thing?
and in my last post that makes no since to u all I am saying is people do stupid or crazy stuff every day and people like your self come on a forum with crocodile tears oh it is so sad that he is dead to bad that avalanche got him.
no matter that he was ridding on a open slope with bent and busted trees at the bottem.or a guys sled malfunctions and a guy is now dead cuz his sled rolled over him as he was bouncing off the walls of some chute he was ridding .and again the crocodile tears come out.but open watter or ice no crocodile tear.Give me a break
the pulpit is for preachers.
heck U ride the trails in the UP the chance of some yahoo taking a corner wide and killing u is greater than going beach to beach over the channel and not making it

OH sory I forgot if there was a chance the guy in any death had a beer in the last week and 1/2 no crocodile tears for them .

Some ride the ice & know what they are doing is safe or would not do it. I know riders that won't cross 10 feet of ice just scares them too much. I know others that only ride rivers & enjoy skipping not my cup of tea but more power to them I don't judge. For me I ride lakes all the time have had some slush problems every year but I know what to do to keep moving & get where I'm going. If in doubt the picks are out of the bag & around my neck but lately in doubt I just don't do it when riding alone. Riding ice is as safe as anything else you do on a sled be informed & don't cross ice that is not safe. Seems simple to me.:)

I have crossed both the bridge and ice. i ride with my girlfriend and she hated how rough the bridge is. I explained to her the danger of thin ice, currents, ice heaves, etc. The last time we crossed the canal on the ice I flew across and stopped at the Ramada. My girlfriend was not behind me and nowhere in sight!!! I felt very sick and panicked, thinking the worst. Thinking I was responsible for leading her across the ice and she didn't make it. I then saw her stopped a little way down the canal. My mind was racing... was she partially through the ice? had her sled broken down? was she stopped on good ice? Her sled then raced toward me and made it safely across. When I asked her what the heck happened, she said she had to get a picture of Hancock. She obviously didn't realize the danger she was in. We will be taking the bridge from now on!!!!!!!

If you can't take the pressure of your job then don't do it. Rescue work is inherently unsafe and if we don't want to do it we wouldn't be in it.

Also I believe that the Coast Guard does the rescue work as well as Houghton and Hancock fire dept's. So the chances that you will be rescuing anybody near the bridge are slim to none.
