I wasn't in Cass county but conditions are great west of there also. Two of us rode from Grand Forks on Saturday, the first 80 miles was cross country along some rivers. The snow was even over the hood a couple of times. Then we caught some trails in NW MN, with the new snow and wind they were hard to see in the open country, the snow was drifted some but not hard. We went into northern Becker county and Mahnomen county. Stopped at our lake cabin in Becker county and the snow was almost up to my waist. My dads old pickup was buried. We rode trails home but many were drifted again. It was like riding in the 70's. The suspensions got a work out but that is what they are for. It was -15 when we started and -5 when we got done, ended up with 315 miles. We are under a winter storm warning today for another 6 to 8 inches and the temps look to be below zero most mornings and only in the teens curing the day. Next weekend should be great also.

No question that many areas are feeling the winter love this year. Far northern/northwestern MN is no exception. Just got back from riding Lake of the Woods and Northern Beltrami Counties on Mon/Tues and the snow was impressive.</SPAN>

Due to visibility issues on Monday we decided to forgo off-trail that day and did a 120 mile loop that included sections along Lake of the Woods – total whiteout on the lake. Nice trail riding though, trail breaking through 10” of fresh all the way.</SPAN>

Ran the big power line on Tuesday. I know for a fact that no one had been through the section we rode this year. Major snow! Machines were pulling heavy and it seemed like the snow was bottomless in the swamp. Still cleaning the cattail fuzz out of my teeth - think the permanent grin may have contributed to the problem. After about 30 miles of line running we decided we better bail at a point we could take the grades and bog drainage ditches back to civilization. Figured we were all averaging just under 5 MPG so range was a bit of an issue. The line photo doesn’t really do the snow justice (we were crossing a county road) but thought I’d throw it in.</SPAN>

Other than locals and former locals, it seems like this area of the state is all but unknown to the snowmobiling public but it can be a real riding gem in a year like this one.</SPAN>

You don't want to come riding up here in NW MN or LOW. Yes there is a lot of snow but it is a locally well known fact that Bigfoot resides in the Beltrami Forest. At this time of the year he gets hungry. You are taking your life in your hands should you venture out in this area. Just stay home and polish your boat. Leave these dangerous areas to us locals.

The Beltrami is desolate enough (and spooky enough) to believe he could be hiding there. Carrying backbacon as a snack is not recommended. Which reminds me, the only sledders we saw over the two days was a group of three guys from Ontario that rode across the river into the U.S. Guess they kind of qualify as locals.

I think this commercial was filmed in the Beltrami Forest, a little south of Norris Camp, a couple summers ago

I had never thought about it before, but are bigfoot attacks the reason for all the old cemeteries in Beltrami forest? Maybe Bigfoot is the reason for all the abandoned towns there? I guess I have been lucky so far, will have to watch my back a little closer in the future riding the forest roads.

Skirule, you saw 3 other sleds in Lake of the Woods area on a weekday? Geez, busy weekdays by our standards. I saw a dozen sleds over 150 miles on a Saturday a month and a half ago and wondered what the heck was with the heavy traffic.

There is a lot of snow here. I took a couple of pics of the snowdrift along the side of the road here near the fairgrounds. There is no hill there, flat ground. It usually drifts there, but seems twice as tall as I can remember ever seeing it. Kind of reminds me of driving up togwotee pass and seeing nothing but snowbanks out the side windows.

One trail picture from Tuesday for good measure.

Well, they were Canadian. Probably some kind of holiday over there.

Pretty amazing snow isn't it? We rode behind the Bosch cold weather test site on Monday. The drifts were huge and they weren't set up. You just plowed through. It was beyond over the hood.

That looks like the trail to 7 mile. If it is, I rode the vintage on that very trail on Tuesday afternoon. I couldn't have missed you by much.
