Catching Flies

Found this on another site, might be worth a try...

Because of all the deer flies this year due to a very wet spring, I thought I would repost this again. I really hate deer flies. You might look like an idiot using this method, but it really works. Deer flies appear to be attracted to the color bright Royal blue. Get a plastic Solo drinking cup that is bright Royal Blue in color. Coat the outside of the cup with something called Tanglefoot. Make sure the Tanglefoot is clear in color, not the brown kind. Walk (or drive around your property on a 4 wheeler or lawn mower)with the cup attatched to a pole or antenna, and the flies will attract themselves to the cup and get stuck. Hundreds of them will come. Why? Nobody knows. The deer flies will be completely wiped out for around two weeks. Here is a link to the study http://news.ufl.edu/2002/08/13/deerflies/

I saw a very similar thing years back. Have thought about setting a few up at the beaches we go to and are bothered by the deer and horse flies, but was worried once we leave, someone would see them, not know what they are and take them down.

We do not have much of a problem with deer and horse flies around the house, but if we did I would have a few of these contraptions set up. Simple as can be to set up.

The flies at our place on Gogebic are terrible, so bad my wife was questioning why we even went up. I wish I had seen this earlier to try. Sounds like they are much more effective if the blue object is moving, not stationary.

The article I saw actually used a blue bucket that was suspended by a rope attached to a shepherds hook. It would then be able to swing in the wind.
