I'm looking into buying a home that is cedar sided on the exterior.
Can someone tell me what type of maintenance is needs as far
as staining and how often.

thanks!

Depends on the overhangs, sun exposure, and weather. If it is a transparent stain you can usually go longer vs. if it is a solid color stain sometimes needs to be refreshed or cleaned every 3-5 years. I have had 3 different houses with a semi transparent stain
and they last pretty long with quality stains. I prefer Sikens, a little pricier but I feel well worth it with excellent UV protection. The longer you go the darker the wood will fade.

I live in a cedar sided home that was stained when I bought it 15yrs ago. I restain it every 7 years or so. I have done it twice since moving in and both times I have used Benjermin Moore stain. If you run the hose it beads right off.

A day or 2 before I start staining I pressure wash it down lightly let it dry then stain away.

I would strongly advise using Sikkens stains, costs a bit more, a 2-coat system, but will give superior finish and durability, especially on south and western sides, where you will need more attention....usually 7-9 years, then a light power wash and a maintenance re-coat. See a paint dealer that sells Sikkens products before you decide. Unless your siding is badly discolored, do NOT use a solid color latex stain. Remember, the PREP work is the most important, power wash and caulk first.

Yep clean it & stain it 7-9 years you will be AOK. Sikkens good stuff but you are now stuck with Sikkens or will have to strip if using other stains. I like Cabot oil stains more options to use other stains than you have with Sikkens.
