Ceramic Tile Question

I am trying to finish the floor under a bathroom door with a strip of marble. The problem is that the ceramic tile is not square to the door. It runs at an angle and is off by about 0.25 inches from one side of the door to the other. Is there a way to cut or grind the edge of the tile without risk of breaking the tile? If I do not get this squared up it will drive me crazy everytime I look at it.

The best way to cut is with a 4 1/2 " diamond blade on a grinder, but if you are cutting up to a door jamb the last inch or two will be difficult.

will be better to cut the marble threshold don't do the full 1/4 do a bit less and fudge with grout .if you don't have a wet saw usually the store called The Tile Shop have good saws in the back room you could give them a few bucks to cut for you.also will take some time but a belt sander will work

well ,do you have full tile at the door? what type of underlayment did you use? what type of tile is it ,marble, ceramic, quarry or porcelain ? and , is the door jam installed, (door frame) if its full tile at the door, i think you will see the angle cut at the theshold. i have been able to use a grinder at the door way from time to time. but you might chip the tiles you are trying to cut. wood underlayment ,works the best, the grinder blade dig in to the wood, and makes a nicer cut. if you have cut tiles at your theshold, pop them out and recut them. i think i wood try a wood theshold with a lip , that overlaps the tile , and hide it that way. i would bet you might even find marble one like that. polarisrider your thoughts

I need a pic. The correct thing to do is remove the tiles in the doorway install the threshold squarely in the door jamb, then reinstall the removed tiles after recutting them. I have also "faked it out" by shaving the threshold 1/8th" over total length and then made tighe joint on one end and loose joint on other end to make up an additional 1/8" then grout in. We do not use marble thresholds in western MI hardly ever. We use Great Lake products, Blanke or www.schluter.com

The tile is ceramic and it is on a cement backer board.

you cannot cut a glazed ceramic with a grinder in a doorway that is already set with good results. If it is Quarry tile or thru body porcelain it will work, but what do you do when you get 2-3" from door jamb. Best to remove tile in door way and replace. wear safety glasses.

This and no snow to ride is just about more that I can handle. Usually this time of year I would have the option to throw the tools in the toolbox and head north!

My wife announced to me that when I leave for Togwotee she is having the guys rip out our kitchen floor and re doing it. She runs the office, she does the scheduling. She wants the rustic wood planking looking tiles. that we have sitting in inventory. I said, "Fine, whatever". We got 18x18 porcelain over 4x4 Victoria Secret store left over tile over Dens shield. She said, "I will have it all tore out and do new mud bed over the heated water lines already in the floor then Ditra for crack supression and set the planking over top with a full flex mortar". Sounds as if she has a plan and so do I.

Sorry for the short hijack....I have that in my kitchen, very cool. It has fooled more than one person! (Of course, I didn't install it; had somebody do it who knew what they were doing).

hey polarisrider, while you are gone, ask the wife if she needs a tile setter over to float and set the floor. happen to be free at this time.

Removing the tile IS probably the best/easiest way to do it , but only if you have replacement tile for the ones that will most likely break when you try to remove them.

Another option,....if your carpentry skills are worthy, would be to remove the door jamb so you can complete the tile cut to the exposed studs.

thank you tilesnake. I spotted the word "Free" in your post. She will have our guys do it. They work cheap for her. looks like she is going to get the hardwood floors refinished too. And she is going to Chicago shopping while all this is happening. This Togwotee trip is getting expensive.
