I'm a little bit confused on the gear oil thing. Hyphoid gears in a car or truck have a massive amount of pressure applied to a very small area, thus the reason for heavy gear oil with a lot of additives. The factory chain case oil is much thinner, and almost certainly has a much lower temperature pour point.
Honestly I'd bet you can get away with just about anything that provides a little cooling and lubrication, but I don't understand why you would deviate so far afield from the factory stuff. Gear oil is cheap. If it was a better product for the job the OEM would be bottling that stuff up, labelling it "chaincase lube" and selling it at a 500% markup. Obviously the experts feel it is not the best lube for the job since what they do sell as chaincase lube bears no resemblence to gear oil.
