I'm a little bit confused on the gear oil thing. Hyphoid gears in a car or truck have a massive amount of pressure applied to a very small area, thus the reason for heavy gear oil with a lot of additives. The factory chain case oil is much thinner, and almost certainly has a much lower temperature pour point.

Honestly I'd bet you can get away with just about anything that provides a little cooling and lubrication, but I don't understand why you would deviate so far afield from the factory stuff. Gear oil is cheap. If it was a better product for the job the OEM would be bottling that stuff up, labelling it "chaincase lube" and selling it at a 500% markup. Obviously the experts feel it is not the best lube for the job since what they do sell as chaincase lube bears no resemblence to gear oil.

Some follow the factory instructions and some just pee in there.

I pee in my chaincase but I do change it every two weeks, starts to stink real bad if you don't, it's free and i've NEVER had ANY problems in 6.9 miles. My pee lube is better than ATF, gear oil, and OEM chaincase oil combined, a "chemist" told me so.

my magnet broke off the end of my stick....yamaha venture .....
do I need to worry?

NO probably stuck to the chain or gear :).

Just joking, I would pull the cover off and find the magnet, If it gets between the gears and chain or case, it might cause some damage.
better off taking it apart to be safe than having it ruin your trip

I work on all makes of sleds and the best bang for the buck is the polaris chain case oil.

I second that, I use the Polaris SCL (synthetic chaincase lube for snowmobiles) on my Ski-doo & Polaris sleds. Works great, holds up just as well as the Amsoil I was using and is less expensive. Plus I get it from my local dealer, and support them.

I'd say a good judge of how your chaincase oil is performing is how black or dark it is when you drain it. I've used Amsoil 75/90 Sever Gear oil over the years with great success, drains out about the same color as when I installed it after a 1000+ miles. Last year I got a my IQ Tour so I decided to run the Amsoil Chain case lube. 800 miles, two up riding out in West Yellowstone and other places and the Amsoil Chani Case Lube drained out really nice and clean. So I'll probably run that for a while.
