If its what your talking about its all drive ways and trying to make it over where they plowed the snow. It can be done but would take for ever.

The wife and I are heading up in about 1 1/2 weeks and I would also like to have some info/confirmation as far as getting up trail 15 through chassel and into houghton.
We usually stay either in Calumet, or Michigamme, but we are thinking about staying in Baraga this trip so we are more in the middle of going to Big Bay, Ontanogan, and up to Copper Harbor.

We've never stayed in Baraga, just drive through it on the way up to Calumet, so I have 2 questions ---

What's it currently like in Baraga as far as trail/snow conditions getting into and out of there
??

And can anyone that's recently done it confirm if you can AND how is it going up trail 15 to get into Houghton ( short cut ) to avoid having to go south and west and then back north ( long way around ) to get to Houghton and head to Copper Harbor and back for the day???

Seems there's alot of conflicting reports as far as taking 15 north and making it into Houghton somehow, so I'd like to find out the real deal......................

Baraga to Houghton thru Chassel not a good route. You can do it, but not a good ride. I won't comment on the ice. Someone should have the know on that.

did it once, never again. this was not a shortcut. take 109 to the super hwy. 3 much easier and more pleasant.

That route will never be dependable or good until they get a connecting trail from Chassel to the Bill Nichols Trail (trail 3).

You would think that after all this time, MSA would make this a priority!

The fact that you have to go south and west to get from Baraga to Houghton SUCKS!!

It has been some time since the trail was lost from Chassel to Painesdale. If memory serves me right, it was land owner issues that closed that trail. Then the proposed railroad grade route went down due to opposing issues. Hard to believe that MSA has not been able to get a new trail thru there by now? Puzzling????

I'm not exactly sure where this incident happened, but based on the text and pictures I interpreted it as being closer to the bridge, if not on the other side. However, I've seen very few tracks crossing across from "Chutes and Ladders" to the Ramada this year as compared to past - and there is probably a good reason for that.

Thanks for all the input everybody, from the sound of it taking 15 up into chassel to get to houghton sounds like a bad idea. As far as the ice goes, I grew up running the lakes and rivers around home, so I'm used to what's involved with that, BUT the way this winter has been unless I was damn sure the ice is good, I'm staying off it. Not to mention my wife has some real issues with the thought of taking a swim in the middle of winter LOL.
If we end up staying in Baraga and head up to CH for the day, we'll just run 15 down to 109 and up to 3 to get up to the bridge like someone mentioned.

As far as staying in Baraga - if we stay in Baraga we'll probably stay at the baraga lakesside inn right on 41. How much " in town " type riding do you have to do to get out into the woods from there ? Similar to going thru L'anse on the trail ? Or better or worse or ?

Right now I'm just hoping this little warm up this weekend doesn't do too much damage up there - they are calling for mid 50s and rain here at home ! Hopefully it stays much colder up there so all is good by the end of the month.................

I'm heading up this weekend, and every day since Sunday the temps keeping going up....originally, they though 33, 35, 36, and 30 for Thursday through Sunday. Now everything is around 37-39. Unreal.

Good luck to you - if you don't mind post here how your trip went and how the conditions were. This winter has been just a bad roller coaster ride as far as the temps go...............

Baraga Lakeside in is a nice motel. The bank has taken it over and is managing it while they look for a new buyer....so the lounge there is closed. Try taking a cab to Lanse for dinner at Skippers, great food, nice bar on the bay....think it cost us $10. when we were there 2 weeks ago.

There is some in town riding, its a little slim compared to 5 miles out of town, but they have been grooming in town and its not too hard to take. Hopefully no warm and rain!

Thanks for the info - we're not going up til next weekend 27th - 29th, so hopefully by then things are back in nice shape up there. Just have to decide to stay in Baraga so it's easier to go to a few different areas, or stay up in Calumet which is usually up into better snow or ?

Just a heads up, that is the Copper Dog 150 sled dog race in Calumet that weekend. Great event, lots of fun, but hotels are full or filling up quickly!!
Have a great trip!!
