Chicago to Bergland...which route?

We are heading up in a few weeks and just wondering which way to go from Chicago. Google maps shows 2 different routes, one going through Milwaukee> Green Bay etc and another going Madison> Wausau etc. Distance looks about the same for both. Any advice?

Depends on your starting point...if you are starting in Indiana, I would avoid going thru Chicago, or even 294 for that matter and go up Interstate 39 thru Rockford. You avoid Chicago(land), O'Hare & Milwaukee. I've lived in the 'burbs of Chicago my entire life and when I lived further east (Downers Grove area) I would take 294 north (to 94 west) and go thru Milwaukee, Sheboygan, etc. However, when I moved west, I love being able to avoid most any congestion by staying west of the urban sprawl. You're right, mileage is about the same....traffic could be an entire different story. :)

Going to Bergland I prefer going through Madison and taking 39/51 north, just my preference. If I'm going to Munising, Ill go through Milwaukee and Green Bay. jmo.

Wow thanks for all the feedback guys. We are leaving in the middle of the night and should (knock on wood) be out of Chicago before rush hour.

Seems less stressful going through Madison, you can definitely use the cruise more going that way. :)
Have a nice trip. Drive safe.

We do that trip ~12 times a year. 39/51 the whole way. Hop off on M through Boulder, left on B that turns into 2. Through Marinesco stay straight where 2 makes a hard left, meet back up with 2 and you are there.

I live north suburbs of chicago I take 94 in to milwaukee to 45 north to I think 10 west to 51 north. This way I have found to be the fastest

I have made that trip TONS! and this is what I do.

I can vouch for Scott and Mark, they have made this trip too many times to count. But in their memory cloud of past road trips "to and from", I think they really did mean LEFT on County B??????????????

I'm sure any GPS would have made the correction for you but ya never know.

Nope, Left on B takes you through PI and up into Michigan. You can get there if you go right, but it is longer.

Hey Scott after re-reading your post I think I read it wrong. You were actually telling them to "NOT" turn right, that goes to US2. I was confused because usually directions state the correct way to go, not the incorrect way to go. HAHA Just bustin' your balls a bit, sorry :D

39/51 can be better if roads are bad with 4 lane roads most of the way. Otherwise I prefer the other way. Either is about the same in time if I remember right

Fastest route- 94 north, 894 bypass, 41 north to oshkosh, 45 north to Watersmeet. East on 2 to stagecoach, stagecoach to East hore Road. If your going to Bergland you could take 45 to Bruce then M28 to bergland. My parents go up 51 its always 25 mins longer. But its a highway easier to pass traffic, 45 is two lanes and you can get stuck behind semi's and sled trailers. My mom feels she'll get lost driving up 45 so she likes highway 51.
