I think the key is to get ride of all the scratches and clear coat from the factory. Get them smooth and re-clear them or the bare plastic is subject to the elements much worse, the clear will protect just as it protects the car paint

I bought one of those kits from Wally World with the various sanding pads and polishes. It actually worked great. Like a dummy I paid a guy $60 to do my headlights on an old jeep I had a few years ago. I used the wally world kit that cost me $16 on my f150 and they're like new.
