Does this mean a jackshaft bearing is going bad? It feels as if the clunk is coming from the clutch side? It still makes a minor click every once in a while when coming to a stop. Since the trails are junk and i ain't riding them no more, i'll probably take off both clutches, take apart, and inspect to get ready for my minoqua trip in late january!

Often when a bearing is going bad there is too much slop , and / or also some magnetic dust surrounding the bearing area. Couple of things to look for.

Indy - Have a bud ride the sled and you stand about 30 yards off to one side. Have him just cruise by you - don't be on the throttle too hard. Have him drive by you one way and then turn around and drive by you so you can hear the other side. This is a good way to determine which side the noise is coming from. It sometimes is harder to pinpoint noises when you are actually on the sled. If you hear a ticking from the clutch side when he goes by I bet it is our all-time favorite speedo/driveshaft bearing on its way out. I have seen and heard these exact symptoms before. Remember it doesn't always take the speedo drive right away. To me this is much more likely than a jackshaft bearing. They hardly ever go out.

It clicks while going 1 mph (right before i come to a complete stop. And, when i brake fairly hard, it clunks. I'll probably replace all drive bearings since it has 5k miles anyways. I'll swap clutches with my dad's sled and try to figure out what the problem is. The trails are trash around here, and it's going to rain next week, and i got to have a good reliable sled for our trip up north.

By all means go through it now. Don't let a known problem ruin your trip.

is the chain tight

It was SUPER loose when i noticed a chaincase leak. I put a new seal on and adjusted the chain and i had to tighten it a lot (finger tighten and 1/4 turn looser). I do have it regeared to 23/40 instead of 24/40. Should i put the old gear on, tighten, and try again?

I once thought my sled had a major mechanical problem due to a "clunking" like a bad clucth, turned out to be just a bad drive belt. try that first.

I've had both the speedo bearing go out and the cold belt problem before. When the bearing went out the speedo started squealing and then went out (broke the needle.) when i put on a new belt that had been stored on the sled for a year or so, it would clunk when starting. After watching the belt engage, i could see the belt was misshaped from strorage. It never did loose this shape and i replaced it after 600mi. Hope this helps.

Well my opinion :: Take and put rear of sled in the air high enough to crawl under to see track drive grab shaft as best as you can and wiggle it up and down side to side .. if any movement bearing is bad . if you have time just replace the speedo side just for spite its vertually easy just remember to pay attention to how it comes apart . when i owned my old indy back in the day i had one go out you could feel it threw the running boards especially if it was toatally past shot . another way to tell is to jack rearend up and have hood open and have sombody rev it till track spins and take a broom handel and put it against bearing area and listen on other end of handel the noise will carry threw the handel .. Old School !! Good luck !!
