well I always see the Yamaha crowd out side there motel rooms with the hair dryers .
better question why go out when it is 20 below? thank u mistress Helga may I have another

We pull started 2 doo 800s -18 at Kontecka in 2003 just took turns pulling & started aok but fumes were gagging us & had to get out of trailer to breath. Just go at it knowing needs hard pulls 800 is the worse in that situation only time you wish you had a 500.lol Got frost bite that day but had fun.:)
 
Last year in Wisconsin, it was 20 below zero. Any suggestions on tips to rope start in that situation?

Do you have a carbureted sled?

If so, then on the night before, use the choke to kill the engine, instead of the key or the tether

The extra fuel dilutes the oil on the cylinder wall, makes a HUGE difference in pulling the sled over the following morning

Hardest part is remembering to do it the night before....................................................

Synthetic oil makes the engine turn over easier in colder temps compared to regular mineral oil, if you're not already using it

No problem starting my 2012 Polaris 800 when it's cold. -31 F on Lake Vermilion when we woke up last year. Started on 2-3 pulls. I put it in an unheated, insulated enclosed trailer overnight.

When its that cold, first thing in the am, pull the rope slowly. You may only get one revolution of the engine on a 1/3 pull. Second pull go 1/2, then the third pull all the way out. This third or definitely the fourth pull should start. This is on my AC 600efi. Never want to just yank on it on that first pull. You could easily break the rope or something else. Then you will definitely get frost bite and miss some ride time.

Now if you are my dad with an electric start carb'ed model, you crank and crank and crank, then crank some more, kill the battery, flood it, etc. Then have your son do some pulling; LOL!!!!

I ALWAYS try to be the first one outside!!!

Try to pull fast. Most spark. Make sure rope engages fully before pulling. Fingers might stick too.
In old days, we had a primer. Sled would start always no matter what. Couple of prime shots of fresh gas would fire off instantly.

If all goes bad, pull the plugs and splash a little gas in the top of the head. Usually works.

in the old old days all the sleds in my family had a mustard bottle full of gas in them.
quick squirt down those wide open carbs good to go
