Comcast vs Direct TV

I read though the thread from a couple weeks ago about Dish vs Direct and there wasn't really many comments about going from cable to satellite so I'm looking for some feedback on this.

I've been with Comcast for 20 years, 3 HD receivers, 2 DVR's and internet service. I'm paying about $210 after tax. We're adding another TV so we'll go to 4 HD receivers in a couple weeks and that will add about $20. No movies, phone, or anything special and I don't rent my modem.

I just got off the phone with Direct TV and they are offering a system wide DVR (can record 5 shows at a time) 4 HD tvs, all equipment and install, 3 months movie channels, NFL Ticket this season and next, $300 VISA card and U-verse internet all for $105 per month for 12 months, then $156/mo after that plus taxes. Seems like a good deal, but I'm concerned about going to satellite and u-verse from cable.

Tell me your experiences and suggestions.

I had Directv with Uverse Internet as my only option when I lived in WI. The Internet connection is no match to cable. Moving to Michigan we went with Charter TV and Internet. In less than a month we dropped their TV service to go back to Directv.
Not sure how Comcast's receivers compare to Charter, but Charter had zero sharing between rooms for recorded services . Directv' Genie's service is fantastic to share room to room and if you are a video file, the picture is far superior with Directv.
just my 2 cents. Good luck and hope this helps.

Directv is the only way to go..your getting 700$ alone in the football package and $300? That pays for a year of service..then add cable internet and your all set

I HATE DIRECT TV. When our contract is up we plan on switching to cable. Every time it THINKS about storming we lose reception. We upgraded to a HD receiver in living room, made us renew contract for 2 years. 9 or 10months later we wanted another HD for bedroom, they wanted new 2 year contract. We had 4 tv,s the whole time. The internet SUCKS, it seems like its not working as much as it does work. In fact looking at my phone right now I'm on 4g not wi-fi.

holy crap..i remember the old cable days when u would wait on hold for 2 hours to get a cust service rep..in 15 years i have never waited more than 10 minutes..and i can count the times per year on one hand i lose reception..verses the hours and days we used to lose cable..i cant compare to nowadays cable since i never went back..but i got mediacom cable for internet and its out all the time and the hold times arent much better for cust service..

so there u go

Comcast is horrible in my area. Currently have DirecTV and att uverse. Great service. Slower than Charter but gets the job done. Uverse streams Netflix with no lockups. Will switch to Charter at end of contract only to get the new customer pricing. It seems no different then cell service providers. Seems one company is always stronger than another depending on the market they are serving.

Did you re aim the dish? The better it's aimed the less it goes out.

I have dtv at home and took a receiver up north. I have the dish mounted in a tree. Even wind swaying the tree doesn't make it lose reception.

So how do you really feel Steve??

Gary - we stayed with Direct TV and got a whole bunch of stuff too (NFL and a gift card). BUT - if you switch to DTV's internet (thru ATT?) you MIGHT have a much slower d'load speed than you do with Comcast.

Yes we loose the signal when a bad storm rolls through (our dish is aimed spot on) but we've kinda learned to live with it. The new Genie's are pretty nice.

I use Direct TV for my channels and chose to stick with Comcast for internet. Comcast internet, IMO, is really good and I need good internet at home for work. But, I chose the slowest connection speed they offered and worked my way up. I ended up with the second cheapest package and can run Xbox, stream movies, etc... Found out I don't need to spend extra money for high end internet with Comcast. Also, my neighbor "borrows" my WIFI so we have 2 houses running off same package.

I'm taking my DirectTV deal to Comcast and seeing what they will do. The U-Verse runs $32/mo now and $42 after a year. My Comcast internet runs $54/mo so based on the feedback so far, and what I had already thought about, I'll probably end up keeping the Comcast internet. We run 4 smart phones, 2 tablets, and a couple TV's on Netflix. Granted they are not all running at the same time, but often Netflix is on 2 TV's and a tablet and couple phones are online. I'm hoping I can get the whole bill from Comcast down to the $130-150 range and I'll just stick with them.

Gary, I have DIRECTV at home and the lake house, and Comcast internet at home. No issues with either, yes heavy snows and heavy rain storms, the reception gets bad, so we do something else instead of watching TV. I'm waiting for a good internet provider up north, I used to run the Phelps cam off of dial up People PC, got too expensive after a while.
