Had a great weekend at Copper Harbor Mtn Biking. Great trails, loved Garden Brook trail. Stayed at Fort Wilkens St Park, very nice.

Lots of great downhill riding, some real crazy features. Loved the boardwalk switchbacks to get down Over the Edge trail (my son not so much).

I remember you mentioning this trip and glad you posted some pics! Looks like a great time and looks like lots of work was put into those trails. Thanks for sharing!

I have often wondered about those trails. Just see the signs from the trail. I hope you had good brakes.... Yikes that is not for this guy. Who is in charge of keeping those trails in shape? Looks like a lot of work...

Not sure who keeps the trails in Copper Harbor in shape but I'd guess its the members of the local IMBA club there. In Duluth, where we do most of our riding, the COGGS group (Cyclists of Gitchee Gummi Shores) maintains our trails. Its mostly volunteer labor that gets together to fix a section but they do have some full time summer trail builders that build new trails, repair old sections, etc... Right now they have Aaron Rogers from Rock Solid Trails in Copper Harbor (he built a lot of the Copper Harbor trails) building sections of the new Duluth Traverse, which is a trail that will run the length of Duluth along the ridge line connecting all the different riding areas together. Rode by a new section of it last night, when done it'll be a 26 mile long trail.

Claiming Iggy started the whole thing. http://www.johndee.com/vbulletin/images/smilies/biggrin.png
Just a bit of kidding on that subject, but there are some dedicated people in Copper Harbor making and restoring those amazing trails. The videos will give a good look at the life on those trails.

The trail on the edge of Brockway will tighten the kahoonas.

Yes it does. Then you drop thru the series of switchback bridges. My son was not a fan of those, he's rode off a few curving boardwalks/bridges before, and going off these would hurt! He had a good/bad crash last night on the Lester River trails in Duluth. Hurt his wrist so we walked out.

Didn't see much peddling. My kind of biking! Seriously though that looks like an amazing trail system. I never knew something like that existed....

Are there any good beginner trails in copper harbor? I don't want to go full bore right away, like in the pics above. I got a Gary Fischer mountain bike with no shocks on it. Wife and I have a seasonal campsite close to there, and I am sick of road riding.

There are some trails you'd be OK on. Bullwinkle to Gardenbrook, the Keewanee Point Trail, would both be OK for bikes with no suspension. We just have front suspensions (hardtails) and were 2 of about 4 people we saw that weekend that weren't riding full supension bikes. In reality, you could ride most of them on a bike with no suspension but you'd probably be unhappy.

I think I mentioned earlier my son had crashed at the beginning of last week at Lester River Trails here in Duluth. So he was fine but then he went riding with a friend on the downhill runs at Spirit Mtn on Friday. We were supposed to be going to the cabin Friday night and were going to pick him up at 6:30. Well, about 5:15 or so we get a call from the ski/bike patrol that they were carting him off the mtn on a stretcher. Apparently he was trying to clear a tabletop jump on a trail, landed nose heavy and went into a big berm and over the front. So we headed down there to see the damages. Picked him and they recommended going to the ER to get an x-ray on his leg. So we did that and luckily it came back negative, just bad bruising. I'd guess its from him hitting the handlebars as he went over. He seems to be fine today, first day of football practice for him so I hope that went well!

Thats the 3rd time in 2 yrs we've had him in ER from some incident at Spirit Mtn and the 5th time in the last 10 yrs. The kids a clutz!

I joke about my son crashing. Well tonight I sit at ER waiting to get stitches from my own crash. Oh well, if the sport can't hurt you, why do you do it?

Sorry to hear about your crash. Hope it isn't too bad.

Quick question, are the trails in CH rideable on a hardtail? I have what I would consider to be a decent bike, Raleigh Tokul 2 - hydraulic disk brakes, front suspension, etc.

I'm fine from the crash, got 8 stitches in an ankle. Yes, Copper harbor trails can be rode on a hard trail. Thats what my son and I ride. You'll definitely be in the minority but we had no trouble on them.

Yep, likely a sub chapter group of IMBA. I am the trail steward of an IMBA/MORC trail in the southwest metro of Mpls/St.Paul.....Murphy-Hanrehan Singletrack Park. It's part of the Three Rivers Parks network of trails.
