Cost to replace shower

Off-topic I know, but there are a lot of people on here who have knowledge of this stuff.

Our house was built in the late-90's - we bought it about 5 years ago, and wife is looking into replacing the shower. Right now it's a decent sized shower, glass on two sides, plain white ceramic tile on the other 2 walls, with a plastic base. The frame is gold colored and has seen better days. The previous owner painted it and the paint didn't take too well on the inside in particular. The floor is discolored, and the tile on the walls aren't much to look at either at this point. What's the ballpark to replace this, except with tile on the floor too? I wouldn't be opposed to another plastic base but it seems worth it to get tile on the floor too. I could do the demo but wouldn't want to mess with the install work.

starting at 5g and ez up to 8
the demo on that gig is prob less than 2 or 3 hr .
some guys use tillable bases made from foam and such . I never have always pre pan liner and pan . cost few more bucks but time tested and solid . and I like t sleep at night . also we demo a lot of 90s showers with tile floors that had no pre pan and the home owner cant figure out why the bath smells musty all the time. it is because the liner has no pre pan pitching to drain . liner just sitting on plywood floor drain lip is close to 1/4 in tall so old stinky H20 just festers down there .
in your parts it may be a bit less or more but that is in the park with mid grade stuff and frameless heavy glass

I have done two showers in our home with the Kerdi set. Price point was low on the film. You just need to pick the finale tile interior.

Check around under the pan before install and do it right. It is surprising how much water leaks with a bad setup. I had to tear out flooring and wall surround on a bath that was built poorly in the late 80s.

I hope that is your case.

I had one bath in the house on 2nd floor remodel with almost two inches of mortar bed and mesh. Not easy.

Demo easy but what you going to do with the busted up tile and shower unit + old glass? Better to just let the pros do it & dispose ...couple hours at most. I agree with EZ prolly about $8K with new glass doors using the best materials tile, glass doors and Weedi board. As always you get what you pay for.

Thanks for input. I was kind of thinking somewhere in the $5K range but that might be a bit low it seems. We'll be getting some estimates soon but wanted to have a ballpark.

If construction in your area is going like it is around here you will be lucky to even have a tile guy call you back, unless you go through a store then you're lining their pockets. I would probably trust less then half the tile guys I know to do a shower, I have seen that many bad one's

I re did 1 about 3 mo ago . the assclown who did it less than a yr ago did a mud set base and no liner just brush on membrane over the base that was also just awful with humps and high spots I think he did it with a 4 inch putty knife. then used mastic to set the floor time and walls . then we fixed the drywall celling in the kitchen under the bath.
best part I bid the job she told me I was out of line at the time because I was a grand higher than the guy she had do it . then she was real fired up when my old bid went up 900 because now we had to fix the celling . she actually thought I should give her some sort of deal because she was ****ed by the other guy from craigslist . I have done bathes for her sister and like 3 people in her circle of friends . but that craigslist 1g savings was just to great to pass up lol.
find some one who has worked with people u know and get on the list . any one who can start next week can start next week for a reason

For sure check the guys work before signing any contract. As Ez said there are some monkey tile layers and if the tile guy does not know all the new hi tech backing board, grout and tile out there find someone else and wait for him...it will be well worth it. Aso check out the glass door installer some are much more skilled than others in measuring and the door and panels are cut and fitted by the glass factory so becareful what you sign off.

I have had some pretty sweet showers on my jobs and seen others that I really like, but it must be the simple man in me that really doesn't understand the hype over them. A fiberglass unit set in something is just fine for me to shower in.

Wifey wanted the nice stuff.
I did the heated floor which I also love now. Spa tub without the tubes as well. I also did surround stereo.

Custom glass for the shower was not easy. They got the glass right on the 3rd try. I was picky to make sure it was right.
I did everything except the glass.

Cost was around 5k for materials.

I just use an old cast iron tub out in the yard. The neighbors stopped giving me weird looks after the first week or so.

Been flooring installer all my life infact 3rd generation. Seen a lot of hacks or carpenters wanting to take the koneu for tile cus hey they can do a floor which also turns out like crap 8/10 times. Like said before foam bases are a joke if you can't do a mud base your in the wrong business and yeah new backer boards are nice but old school concrete board is the answer other than built ins cus you never know if you will have to take a tile off cus somebody chipped it installing door. But major thing is you get what you pay for with plumber (don't know how to put drains in floor right or valves in at depths needs) same as tile guy and last but most the tile lots of tile aren't same sizes at big boxes or mixed dielots even tile shops some tiles aren't the greatest (seen 1/4 out of square before multiple times mostly on slate and travertine) but a good installer can make a .99 cent a foot tile look like at 5.99 when he is done with his layout, patterns, and quality. Seen to many issues in my life and hate the phone calls to fix other people's work. But up here in northern wi it seems the biggest bull****ter wins
