Moose,

I cannot determine with confidence where the water came from. It could be a few different sources: 1-Right from the pump station, 2- condensation of a long period of time, 3- since no box on the truck, maybe the rain water infiltrated into the tank through the sending unit seal.

4- Phase separation. (Probably the most likely cause if you used ethanol fuel.)

Interesting links

I just went out after reading your post and snapped a pic of what appears to be water. In the video it just was clouded. I have a distinct seperation of what appears to be different liquids. Obviously I am not qualified to determine if it is water at the moment but here is a pic and see if you can see the line in this bucket.

also, would the same conditions be occurring numerous times for the last 5 years of buying fuel at the same place? I mean we have warm, cold conditions with varying temps of underground fuel temps.

If the phase separation occurred due to water saturation, you would have a distinct layer of water and ethanol mixed together. In the video it is only temperature change that caused the ethanol to separate . The water content did not change. It doesn't take a lot of water to cause it. According to that link, only a couple tea spoons of water/per gallon of gas, is needed to be at the saturation point. That's pretty easy to accumulate with simple condensation.

I'm not sure if this would work or not, but it might be easy to test. If you can get a small sample of the bottom layer, try to light it. (remember, safety first)
I would think if there was any ethanol in it, it should burn to some degree. If its pure water, obviously not.

I just read the entire thread titled "fuel school." Very good link and thanks a ton for posting it. I have heard people refer to blended gas as being a possible problem but now it makes sense to me.

On a positive note, Pat's Yamaha in Greenland does sell none ethanol fuel and that is all I will ever use from here out. I learned my lesson and am sold on Non Eth fuel

I will try that. I was planning to siphon off the good gas and run it in the van because I have 10 gallons and than replace the filter. My wifes van is all of a sudden hard starting and just today I hammered it going down the highway coming back from haveing a pasty at Krupps and she is chuggin terrible, will not go over 55.

Doesn't Pats sell none corn fuel. The mini mart by my camp sells corn free year round. I haven't had a fuel problem with any of my old junk.

Thanks for the laugh Lenny, glad to know I'm not the only one that has issues like that sometimes. Things that should take 1 hr take days, a lot of beer, swear words, but in the end it does get fixed somehow.

Hey Lenny your project sounds like most of mine!!! I have solved a lot of problems with advice from an old heavy equipment mechanic.. One day he told me to remember the word KISS... I said what are you talkin about.. Then he told me what it meant.
KISS=Keep it simple stupid!!! Kinda makes sense quit over- thinking usually some thing simple causes the problem.
By god I think its right some times!! Haa Haa!!!!!!
