I have to get a crank worked on and am dropping it off in Eagle River tomorrow. it's from a low dollar 91 yamaha 485 fan cooled venture. You can get one trued, couple bearing and seals for roughly $250. You can mail the crank to places but not sure of your gonna be able to beat 2-3 hundred. Anything unusual and it goes up fast

Are you positive the seal is bad?

The clamping force of the crankcase holds the seal in place. With the crank out of the case the seal will be loose and wobble around on the crankshaft, which is normal for that style (labyrinth) seal.

There are no rubber parts on that seal except the oring on the outside of the seal housing. If you need to replace the oring on the seal housing you can stretch the oring over the rods without any disassy of the crank.

Have the crankshaft in my hand and yes this is a rubber seal on this crank in the middle. The seal has rotted apart from old fuel in the bottom of the cases. I think on the free air machine you are right about that style of seal but on the fan cooled it is rubber.

Sorry, you are right. I am replacing crank bearings on a Free Air crank right now and forgot about the Fan motor being different.

I thought that in the day the aftermarket made some kind two piece seal that could be installed with out slitting the crank.

It might be worth stopping by a Cat dealer that has around awhile to see if they remember.
