Curious - Anyone else ever think about selling their sled and getting an ATV instead?

As one that does both, I can say that ATVing is not nearly as fun as snowmobiling. On paper, it seems like it should be or could even be more fun.

I guess some of the main differences is ATVing is dirty. If you are the first one, that is fine, but having to follow someone and eat their dust all day can really take the fun out of it. Spring rides or rides just after the rain are dust free, but while playing in the mud is fun, riding all day in wet cloths is not.

You are also way more limited in where you can ride an ATV. Off trail is pretty much a no go, with the exception of logging roads that are in areas where it is allowed. ATV's can cause way more damage to the land than a snowmobile and for that reason are not allowed in many areas that snowmobiles can go.

Don't get me wrong, ATVing is fun. But in my opinion, you will be sorry if you get rid of your sled and get an ATV. I would try to swing having one of each, just opt for a used ATV and not have to spend as much to pay for it.

The wife and I just bought some property in Hurley near the Gile Flowage last spring. It is right off the snowmobile trail in the winter and the atv trail in the summer as well as within walking distance to the flowage. When we bought it, I managed to get a 1986 yamaha YF200 Moto 4 2 wheel drive utility 4 wheeler for $600. It was rough but ran great. Originally it was for working on the property (5 acres), but we went on the trail a couple of times as well. My wife came back from her first ride and said " We have GOT to get another one of these ". I bought another used one from a friend for her for xmas, a 2005 suzuki 250 2 wheel drive utility. I figure at our age, we will most likely stay on the trails and routes so 2 wheel drive is all we really need. BTW I also bought a used plow from my friend and it works fine for the little plowing I do. It was great having it after this snow we got in Northern Illinois.

I would say see if you can borrow or rent one and try trail riding before actually buying one and see if you do like it. BTW I have the 2 used 4 wheelers and 6 used sleds varying from a 1977 JD Cyclone 340 to a 1997 Ski Doo Grand Touring 700, notheing newer. I do also have a pontoon boat I bought in 2005 as well so I do keep busy through out the year.

Cuzz- I think you should just 4 wheel instead. Snowmobiling is uneventful...

Let me know you're ready to sell the sled. :D

I would never give up sledding for atving. Like John said, if you are the lead guy on the atv, yea, it's a good time. If you are someone in back, umm, not so much fun. Sucking in dust really sucks. Now, if you space everyone out by a half mile or so, then the dust isn't so bad. LOL. I am currently atvless, after having two since 2006. I do enjoy exploring the logging roads in the yoop by atv, but it is not nearly the same as when I am on my sled, not even close. Playing in the mud is fun, but cleaning them afterwards sucks. I can ride my sled from my garage, but can't with the atv.

We usually go atving when we are up for a week in July. This may be the first year not doing that. I may need to rent, oh Chad, how much for a prowler for the week? LOL.

I can ride my dirtbike right from my garage, I can ride my sled from my garage. They are both an absolute blast. Dirtbike is way cheap.

Inexperience caused me to destroy a shoulder in an atv tire rut. That is a dangerous option imo. I am ignorant as to how the atv trails are in the summer though, but past experience tells me 4 wheels are the way to go!

Been there, did that, traded sleds for 4 wheelers back in 2001, was back snowmobiling in 2 years, never thought about going back to 4 wheeling in the winter. As a matter of fact, I think we enjoy snowmobiling even more now that we had tried the 4 wheeling in the winter.

The wife and i have always had sleds. being empty nesters. we bought a cuople of used 660 grizzlys several years back and go ATVing several times a year. THe bigest difference for me is the maintanence and mess of the atv's. Like a previous poster mentioned. Dust, Dirt, Mud. always a mess to clean up. The wonderfull thing about sleds is that when they thaw out, they are clean. So are your clothes. After a day of riding atvs in wet conditions, throw what ever you have on in a garbage bag and take it to a laundry mat or throw them away. I love both, but prefer sledding. However, i have been looking at Razors. A buddy just got one, and they are a blast.
