I'll take oak any day over anything else. Tried ash, pops too much. Birch is o.k. but the paper smokes alot. Maple is o.k. but lots of oak in my area, so that is my favorite.

I take it you don't have a air tight stove? My stove is air tight meaning I throw the wood in, close the door and adjust the air intake with a lever. It can pop, smoke, shake, sing and dance, I don't care. It's cheap btu's. I also have a stainless steel flue liner which stays hot so I have virtually no creosote buildup except right at the cap with the stupid spark arrestor. The only wood that I have ever heard pop was hemlock which I love to burn because it's hot and fires up fast. It's great for early spring and late fall when you want a short hot fire. Even if we had a good supply of oak I probably wouldn't pay for it because of having an air tight stove.

At bed time (10:30) I throw in 3-4 logs and by 3-4 am I have to get up and throw in another 3-4 which will make it till about 9 am if I want to maintain about 68-72 degrees in the house. Now usually on the weekends I go to bed about 12 and don't get up to load it and by 7 there is still enough embers to get a fire going without re-lighting. I could fill the fire box up all the way and run through the night but I bought to big of stove for my house. Even throttled down it's still is to warm. My house is about 1400 sq ft and the stove is designed to heat 2500. I have tried many ways to not have to get up during the night but it seems best just to keep smaller fuel in the box. My internal clock is set and I wake up without fail mon-fri, load the box and back to snoozin without thought. I burn just under 4 cord a year

I don't have a favorite. Where I get my wood there is an abundance of dead and dying Elm. So that is mainly what I burn. It does stink a little, but I don't buy it, it's free. I can't complain about the smell of free wood. Our house is about 3100 sq. ft. and I use about 5 cords, I don't think that is to bad. This fall I made between 11 and 12 cords and figure it cost me about $125 or so for everything, and that includes $50 to rent a splitter for a day, a new chain for the saw, and gas for the saw and truck. I like that cost, heat my home for 2 1/2 years for $125. I am also blessed that I have neighbors and a dad that don't mind if I cut their dead trees.

heck yea, you got a nice system going there. I wish I could do that. Last year I made my own also but spent a fair amount of time doing so, was a good time actually. I spend about 250 (per year) on the wood, a few gallons of gas, a bit of 2 stroke oil and I borrow the log splitter from a bud. Wouldn't trade the entire experience for anything

Started in May I dropped 9-13 full size trees. Everytime I go out I split a face cord at a time. I split two per week and only one when it was hot!!! Log splitter is in my future!!!

rp7x "Wood master"

Got wood? I was over at rp7x's the other day and took the pictures below of his wood piles. Notice how straight the guy makes the pile when he unloads the logs. rp7x is pretty good with a chain saw and his wife loves to split it.

The picture quality is so so as I used my cell phone and the lens is slightly scratched from all of the use!

"and his wife loves to split it."

What???? Are you serious? My wife couldn't find a woodpile in a lumberyard.

(not that there's anything wrong with that since my housekeeping skills leave a bit to be desired)

Yes, I'm serious. She weighs maybe a 100 pounds and would out work most of us!

I split a lot of wood when I was a kid. We heated the house and three cattle water tanks with wood. I never failed to "ring the bell" at the fairs.
Now I heat a 1100 sp ft garage with wood cause wood is free.
Big pile is for the garage, second is for the house, fireplace.
Had to get a splitter for the pss elm, stringy stuff.
