Would be the last place I’d go the Christmas/New Year’s week even if conditions were good busiest week of the year…looking at the temps it’ll down to the dirt in alot of places. Was supposed to go up last week and cancelled. Friends that went said you really need to get to Mass city before trails and snow were decent..doesn’t leave much ground to cover trail wise. Hate to say it but this is looking a lot like last year..40’s and rain late week and weekend..here we go again 🙁

Part of what you say is true but if you have kids that is the time they are off and some fun can be had maybe not the best trails ever but I’ve been able to have many good rides in that time frame. Yes trails are better Mass and up but yesterday I put 100 miles on of almost perfect trails south of Mass. The warm up is going to be devastating. And this year is way better than last as if you are willing to go to the snow you have good trails. Look at Indy500 post about EUP and I already have half the miles I did all last year so it’s already better. Think positive and think snow.

The areas with the deepest snow depth will hold, but would likely need some fresh on top after these handful of mild days are over. The base the eastern UP has is incredible. The rain/warm temps a week ago helped solidify their base and should last them all season. Cold weather is supposed to trickle in after the new year and hopefully the lake effect snow guns kick back in. I was supposed to bring up my son the day after Christmas but I’m giving it a pass as I see some possibly rainy/sleet days mixed in. I’d rather pull him out of school on a Friday when he can go instead of making him ride in crap.

We did the Gogebic lodge for 8 years in a row over New Years back in the 80's-early 90's...It was fun then...But I wouldnt be doing it again at this point in my life...My sleds are parked till mom n dad are back to work and the kiddies are back in school...I prefer my 300 mile days in the U.P. where I see more deer than other sledders...

I used to love heading up between Christmas and New Years. The kids would ride the 4 wheelers on the lake, some ice fishing and a little sledding to the local bars to watch some football, hot chocolate and food. Great times and never had an issue. Sure its busy but that was some of the fun. Unfortunatley it hasnt happened in a couple of years. Kids are in college, one has wrestling which never has a break and they have other interests. Also, dang weather has not been the best. Its not happening again this year for us. I reserve the long mileage trips days for the other times of the year.
