Dehumidifier question

Ok actually a couple different questions

Who uses the smaller “portable ones” (about 30” tall and 16” square inches around) and has had luck with what brands. I am looking for one just for my basement, I am guessing about 800 square feet. The dehumidifier would only get used 6-8 times a year for a day or two at a time.

Ok so the reason I am looking for a new unit……….I purchased a Maytag 45 pint unit almost 4 years ago (it will be 4 years in Aug.) and it worked great the first 3 years. I pulled it out a couple weeks ago and plugged it in overnight but in the morning there was less than a cup of water in the tank, I just assumed there was not enough moisture in the air. Well I plugged it in again the other night and I experienced the same problem. So I pulled out the manual and was happy to find out it was still under warranty (5 year warranty).

So I called to see where I can take it for service, I was told my unit was made under a private label agreement and the company that actually made the unit went out of business and Maytag will not honor or back up the warranty because it was from the other manufacture. But they offered me $40.92 for my inconvenience. The best part of this I have to pay another $25.00 to get rid of the unit since it has Freon or whatever in it!

My complaint is Maytags name is on the unit, Maytags name is on the owners manual that has the warranty 3 pages in, but THEY WILL NOT HONOR THE WARANTY! There is no mention of this private companies name (Fedders) anywhere. What the heck is up with that?

I have talked to a couple different people at Maytag and I get the same bla bla bla…………. Anyone ever hear of B.S. like this?

That's insane. Maytag dropping the ball? Who cares who made the unit. They got their name on it. It is under warranty still. Maytag needs to stand behind it. Call the Maytag repair man and have him fix it. Don't pay the bill if you get one.

In all likelyhood, the unit lost it's freon....call an appliance repair place to see what the cost would be to recharge the unit.

Likely cheaper than buying another one.

don't pay to get rid of it! look for someone on craigslist. There's plenty of guys out there that will pick up your stuff with freon in it for free

from reading on line yes it sounds like the unit did lose it's freon........I did call a couple places and most will not work on them. I did find one guy and his assumption was the same.......his guess was around $75.00-$100.00 to fix it. IF he could find the leak, but he said some times he can not find the leak but I would still get billed for his time :( So it might be time for a new one but I know what brand I will NOT get this time.

Going to try calling again tomorrow but my assumption is still no satisfaction!

Did you by chance check the filter and coil to make sure it is clean? A dirty filter or coil will cause it not to work properly. If it did loose its refrigerent gut the the copper and or aluminum out of it bring to scrap yard for a few bucks.

We have a Samsung. It's old and still works good.

Seems like the old units lasted a lot longer.

I did a whole lot of research on these dang things before replacing a dead one this spring. There are quite a few consumers dissapointed in the life of these things. Our last one made it 2 years.

Warranty stuff is getting a little crazy on home appliances. They are really being made to just simply throw away.

Who makes the Mag Lite or Weber grill of home appliances?

I use an LG humidifier all summer in my pole barn in da yoop to keep my equip from rusting. The LG unit has worked well for at least 3 summers running all the time (it does cycle on and off, I put the control at 65% ) The electronic units are the way to go for me cause they can operate below 60 degrees without icing up. I turn the thing on in May and off in September. I also had a Maytag that lasted 1 yr and instead of paying to dispoe of the worthless thing I dropped it in menards parking lot---which is where i bought it (they would not honor the warranty either)

I had to run downstairs to see what I own. Whew! it is an LG. Parking lot return policy is fantastic. Maybe we can do that with all our junk. Let's candy coat it and call it recycling.
