Thanks for your insight Brooks,

I would like to talk to you more about this offline. What would be the best way to get in touch with you.

Thanks again

I had dish installed at an address in the Chicago area. The installers were hacks but this was just temporary. I moved the equipment to my house in the UP and have been able to get All of the local Chicago channels. I watch a lot of sports and my teams being the , sox, bears, hawks, and bulls this worked out for me. No need for the nfl package on direct tv etc. I get the minimum package to get HD channels for free. The DVR is nice. I have vip 722. I think there is a newer one now with slingbox capability. You can controll and watch over your homes network (wireless or wired). You can even set it up so you can get to it any where on the internet. You can also set dvr events remotely. I have 3 recievers and use a couple of dp-44 switches to connect them all. I also have a modulated coax setup from the living room dvr that can be picked up by tvs that have no recievers from dish in some of the rooms. One of the 2 remote controlls for the dvr (2 tuners) is UHF so it works in any room.

This is not the kind of setup your average dish installer would be willing or able to do. None of it is rocket science and you always have lots of options.

A really good source for info on satellite info in general is
www.satelliteguys.us
They have charts showing what channels are on what satellites.
Where the spotbeams are focused. These are used to focus on geographic areas for local channels. Chicago channel spotbeam is oval and comes close to the UP. Conus beams are wide and are used for nationally broadcasted channels. Conus US beam covers most of the united states.
All the info is out there. Sorry is I went on to much of a technical rant.

Interesting.

The newer one is a 922, it was supposed to be a big hit, but it is rarely ordered.
Both dish and direct allow you control your dvr remotely etc... Direct has moved away from the technology of the slinglink because it downloads too slow.

Why on earth do you have 2 dp 44 switches? How many satellites are you picking up? How many dishes do you have on your roof? And why would you have dp 44's rather than dpp 44's?

It is important that people know before they order dish that the living room dvr is capable of broadcasting 2 channels simultaneously. Thus if 20 tv's were connected to that receiver, they would all need to be on one of the 2 channels.
It is also important that people know only the tv in which the receiver is at will get high definition.
It is also important to note that if you are recording something 1 of the 2 channels the receiver broadcast is stuck on whats being recorded, and if you are recording 2 things you must watch what is being recorded or something from the hard drive of the dvr.

DPP 44 must be correct. I was going completely by memory which was polluted last night by a few cocktails.

I have 2 dishes pointing to 4 satellites. 2 noon dvr recievers and the dvr with 2 tuners.

You are right about the modulated channels not being hd. I use old tube tvs that folks are throwing to the side now a days. (old analog tuners)

I am still baffled by why your tech used 2 44 switches rather than just 1. Having 2 dishes that pick up a total of of 4 satellites may justify the use of one to combine the satellites. Each 44 switch has 4 ins (4 different satellites can come in), and 4 outs (can go out to 4 recievers). I have never seen a dp 44, as far as I know they are all dpp, which means that you can use the separator.

The reason I ask is that dpp 44's are expensive and they aren't just thrown at techs to have a ton of extra on their trucks. Scrambling to get one is the more likely scenario. It would consume more time, and be extra work to put a 2nd one in. If it was on a work order and not needed, they are very sell able, or may save a tech from having to out of his way to get one.

That being said, if you have a 1000.2, or a 1000.4 the lnbs have an extra port, a built in switch, and the 4th satellite could be tied in that way. But, of course, with dish you always get, this works this way, not that way, and this works with this and not that.
Do you know what satellites you are using?

Brooks why can't direct TV have more than 2 programs recording at same time on 1 DVR? Why not be able to record 3 or 4 things then watch a 5th program at same time on 1 DVR. Are they trying to sell more DVRs to get more recording ability? Kinda sucks.

Record 4 programs and watch a 5th? What 5 concurrent shows could you possibly need/want to watch?

White Dust,

The HR25 will be coming. I think it has 5 tuners and a 1 terabyte hard drive. I would imagine that if you look on the internet you will be able to find some information on it. Google HR25, see what you find.

xcr440.
White dusts question is a good one. One thing I am finding with the whole home service in the homes of the people who are tv freaks, is that 1 dvr is not enough and their having to order 2. Example: If a family of 4 tv freaks has one hddvr in the living room and 3 high def receivers in their bedrooms, they are all sharing the one hddvr and need to compromise or replace one of the high def receivers with a hddvr. And then they need to fight over who gets the hddvr in their own room.

I don't know how Directv is going to work the new HR25 into the homes. It is so much better than the HR20-HR24. As a technician I have to put in what they give me, how can I give one guy a 25 and the next guy a 20-24?

Something I recently learned is that you can get directv's new high definition guide early, it a a pretty cool update. Here is how you do it: On Friday night between 10 pm and 1 am force a software download:
1. reset your receiver
2 while you are looking at the hello starting up screen type in 0 2 4 6 8
3 wait a minute
4 you should get a blue software download screen
If you didn't get it try again. (reset it again, try 0 2 4 6 8 as soon as the blue lights on the front of the receiver light up)
5 let it download and it will eventually pop back up on the channel you were watching.

Sounds like you don't have a DVR. I told installer I didn't need a DVR & he said you may think you don't but you really do. So what the heck I took 1. If you want to max your package you need to record some stuff
then watch later whenever or leave room return then back up & watch something current.Very convenient.

They also schedule nework progams at prime time at same time & then a program like Xfactor over laps them all. Current Dvr you can watch 1 & record 1 or record 2 watch 1 from hard drive on DVR. Something like Xfactor or football games yesterdays news if you don't watch live. Also movies running 24-7 that overlap. Also lots of good stuff on Natgeo & Discovery to record & watch.

As you start to time shift record on DVR you start to think this tech is very limiting as programs start cancelling out each other & you start asking why not more capability? As Brooks say it is coming & is needed.

I guess the TV doesn't rule what I do. If I miss something, I miss it. Heck, I don't even have a HD TV yet..... I'm sure if you watch enough, a DVR is a good thing.

Does not rule what I do either but when I do have time to watch might as well have something on the tube that is enjoyable. That is the beauty of the DVR elimiates all the crap watch only good stuff. As Brooks says when you have a family everybody has their favs & just not enough capability to accomodate everyone. Then it starts why did you cancel this erase that yada yada yada!!!!!!!!! Brooks knows the drill.:) lol

Brooks did my install last week. He did a great job answering all my questions and the direct tv is working great. Very glad I ditched the cable. Have to see what happens during bad weather, but haven't had HD in a couple of years and really did miss it for watching sports, especially hockey. I have recorded a half a dozen on demand movies for the holidays and recording a couple a day from the movie channels while I have them. If you are in central minny be sure to give Brooks a shot at the job. So far so good in Annandale.

Brooks - ThThee reason I have 2 of the 144 switches is that I have 4 bedrooms, an office, garage, 2 living rooms all wired for satellite. I also have the power injector in play. dish is 1000.4 with 3 wires between the 144 and dish lnb's. wing dish jumps off of 1000.4.

Cant remember the satellites for sure. Will have to look. I think it is 119, 110, 129. the wing 67.5 or some thing like that. ( The one that also has hd programming.

I bought the 144 switches on ebay personally. I also installed it all my self. I have had bad experiences with dish installers in the chicago area.

The 1000.2 has the 110, 119, and 129. The 1000.4 has the 77, 72, and 61.5. All the high definition channels are on the 129. The 61.5 is now missing a couple of the high def channels but they are on the 77 and/or the 72.

Lol, you must carry your receivers with you every time you move from room to room. Most people would probably just mark the cables and flop them accordingly rather than spend a bunch of $.
