I thought for sure it was mandatory in Wisc, but looking at the DNR regulations it isn't mentioned anywhere. So I would say no. I guess a rental agency would have to ask for proof of insurance to let a sled go out, and they don't, so that's another indicator.

yeah not a good idea liability at minn.
what do u think a 50 mph side swipe would do to a guys leg?
what do u think the lawsuit pay out for a guy needing a yr of aftercare and never walk the same again?
more than I have in the bank I can tell u that

this is what my home insurance co said
It was my pleasure to speak with you this morning regarding your 2003
Artic Cat F7 snowmobile. I double-checked with the home office and
confirmed they no longer charge premium for providing liability coverage
for snowmobiles - this coverage is included at no charge. The liability
coverage protects you in the event you are responsible for injuries or
property damage resulting from an accident.

There is still a premium for physical damage coverage. If you decide
you want the Artic Cat covered for damage I would need to confirm the cc
size, serial number and value.

Not "Required" here in Michigan, but you would be foolhardy to be without it. Liability at the very least.-Mezz

Do you have that in WRITING? If so, I would hold on to that letter in a safe place. If not, I would get it in writing.

snobuilder, reason i ask cause friend said that you have to have and required by law.i know i must be getting old because there are so many things you can,t not do with out worry about law and tickets nowadays.plus seeing that alot of the trails are on private lands just cant see to worry about everything as long as you are a responsible rider.i do have sled insured always had because of the rising cost of sleds that most are over 10grand.my biggest worry is theft not so much on accidents because everyone knows better have your own thread and needle most likely no ones gonna show up in time!!!
