Put a volt meter or simple test light on the hot post (the post, not the cable end or nut) on the starter. If it lights up when you go all the way to start on the key switch then the starter is bad.

It may be a simple fix internally or a replacement starter, either way the starter will need to be apart to find out whats wrong with it.

Napa Part #?

I had a 2007 renegade that I thought was a dead battery so I bought a new battery and when replaced still was dead, so I
So I bought a new relay at Napa for $12.00 and after replaced it started right up. Moral of the story... I wish I would have
Tried that first before building and replacing and charging a new battery.

..I have had batteries show 13V and drop to almost zero when you turn the key....they show full but have no capacity.

Battery load tester- I have a couple 100 amp testers (that test up to 1000CCA's) I have over 30 batteries, and these things will let you know you have a problem BEFORE you have the problem. You put a 100 amp load on for 10seconds, if you see the voltage drop after the inital drop, time to replace!
Yours dap, (if it is the battery) will drop below 4v as soon as you hit the test button.

Want to test the solenoid... jump it with a pliers or something from one terminal to the other accross the 2 lugs on the solenoid. Basically eliminating the solenoid from the circuit. If the starter doesnt try to turn over, the starter is either stuck, or the battery is too weak. If there is sufficient amperage available, it will spark when you jump it, but don't worry about it, it is just a test. Dont leave it on there too long. Also, check the starter bendix(part that contacts the ring gear on the clutch). if it is already in contact with the gear, you have to rotate the clutch backwards to release the bendix from the gear, back into the normal position(retracted). See how that helps...My guess is the battery though.

All good remidys but donot tap on Starter as they now have a ceramik fields and if you crack starter is junk. Cost as much for new fields as new starter.

Get your self a Battery Bug , It is a small meter that tells you the state of your battery voltage and life or capacity to start . They are cheap and available from Wingstufff.com. I have them on my snowmobiles and motorcycle. Lets you know at a glance whats going on, will even give you waring when battery is about to fail.
