Anybody know the reasoning for EST for the UP? I know if UP county touches Superior they are on ETS. To me makes no sense & entire UP should be on CST same as all of WI.
Presumably to observe the same time in both pieces of Michigan (for no useful purpose that I can see, just "politics")!

From Wikipedia: (click →) "Upper Peninsula of Michigan, Time Zones" (quoted here in part):
In 1967, when the Uniform Time Act came into effect, the Upper Peninsula went under year-round CST, with no daylight saving time. [!] In 1973, the majority of the peninsula switched to Eastern Time; only the four western border counties of Gogebic, Iron, Dickinson, and Menominee continue to observe Central Time.

Farmers now have GPS,lights, and a lot of other things . There is no need for it. Besides,my 6 year old can't keep her eyes open to watch the fire works when we are in the UP over the 4th.

That is what is confusing that Gogebic,Iron,Dickinson and Menominee went with CST while the rest of UP is on EST. In summer Phelps,WI is light at about 9:45 PM in June but that fades quickly as summer moves on. Seems to me 9:45PM not so bad for daylight savings time and UP would be better off opting for CST and ditch EST.

I say keep it. I like the extra hour of daylight. I say stay on EST as well. I've spent time in places with CST. Getting dark at 4p.m. is depressing. As far as the kids in the morning. Yep in 2 weeks it will be light again at 7. They go to school in the dark all winter another 2 weeks isn't a big deal. Why do discussion on why school starts so early? No reason for kids to be at school at seven. When I went it was from 8:20 to 3:45. Maybe so parents have some free babysitting.

Keep in mind, the proposed elimination of DST is being considered in Michigan only, at least as far as I know. The rest of you that like it, love it, got to have it, can keep it. It's senseless here.-Mezz

EST? I'm sure you meant DST.

Also, from CAPCON, Michigan Capitol Confidential, By Jack Spencer | Oct. 23, 2015:
(click →) "Spring Forward, Fall Back? Bills Would End Daylight Saving in Michigan" (quoted here in part):

“But if the problem is a negative effect on the tourism industry, then, yes we could just change over to having the same hours we now have with daylight saving time all year,” [Rep. Jeff Irwin, D-Ann Arbor] continued. “The problems come when we have to keep changing the clocks. It’s a question of getting on one schedule and staying on it.”
Of course staying on "daylight saving time all year" would be the equivalent of moving the clock forward (as in "Spring ahead") to place Michigan in the Atlantic Time Zone, "Atlantic Standard Time (AST, UTC-4) along with Nova Scotia1, New Brunswick1, most of Labrador1, and Thule AFB[SUP]1[/SUP] in Greenland(!) as well as Puerto Rico, the Dominican Republic, the US Virgin Islands and Guyana. How stupifyin' crazy is that?
([SUP]1[/SUP] but these places also switch to DST in the summer)

"Sen. Tom Casperson, R-Escanaba, [who] represents the four counties that are currently on Central time. 'The people I’ve talked with in my district have basically said leave it alone,' he said."
