Im really close to buying some sleds half way across the country and am really scared about it. The posting says its got the vehicle purchase protection program and the seller has 100% positive feedback but Im just weary about paying for something and not haveing it in hand. I guess I just dont know enough about it and I dont wana be another statistic that gets the scam job. Anyone with experience and advice please help.

If you are scared and don't know about it don't doo it! I personaly wouldn't buy a sled that was halfway across the country...With a sled I wouldn't pay for it before seeing it, pics don't count. There are a lot of crooks out there!! Beware!!

Always taking a chance in a situation like this. So gut feeling is usually always right.....besides no matter how good of a deal by the time you add fuel and time into getting it or them is it still that great of a deal????

screw the rules that he wants, tell him/her that you will bring the money with you, and not prepay but you will be there in X days....

When in doubt, dont prepay

I buy off ebay all the time. But only things I'm willing to trash if it's junk.
Only cheap stuff. What are you going to do with that buyer protection, haul it back half way across the country if there is a problem?

If you can't look it over before you pay don't do it.

Never pay before you see it. Worst case...you get out there and it isn't what you want or isnt what he said....duck outta the deal.. You CAN'T get a neg feedback, sellers can no longer leave negs.

Heres my catch though both sleds have under 250 miles on them and one is a year old and one is 2 or 3 years old and the shipping on the sight says its free and if i get 5 days to have them in my possession before paypal gives the seller the money. Is this realistic ?

I've found, struck a deal and sent payment on more than 10 vintage sleds this past year. All paid for in advance. Every sled was exactly as expected or better. I'm still buying this way!

If it's that great of a deal, it probably should have sold locally. I say run! Somethings not right. There's no such thing as free shipping. Kind of like my freight carrier says their rates have not gone up. But they have a surcharge. Yep, I was born yesterday. Well, maybe the day before.

Ebay

I've bought and sold sleds, jet skis and big enclosed trailers never been burned or burnt anyone.

During the process though I try to strike up quite an open dialoge, e-mail, phone, etc.

If I can't do that and get comfortable then I walk away as a buyer or seller.

GOOGLE: E-Bay Buyer Protection Scam!

I was looking for trucks on Craigslist, . . . .
and found a deal JUST LIKE THIS (too good to be true)
Lots of people have been taken.
Like others in this thread have mentioned, Don't Buy something
like this WITHOUT First Looking LIVE at them.
Don't Be Taken.
Your feelings are very justified.

Let us know what you decided.

If its too good to be true then it probably is. Look at his e-bay score and see how many transactions he has had and it what time frame and what are they. Did he just buy 20 baseball cards in the last week? Do your homework first. Why doesnt he want cash in fist at pick up?

How about a link so we can see the add. Hard to tell if it is a scam or not without looking at it.

I'm kinda a eBay nut. I have had good dealing with buying cars and the like items but for good reasons. Ask questions, for big money things, use the "ask seller a question" option. Ask them for the phone number and talk with the guy about specific details. If he won't call you or give you his number, forget it, not worth it than. You'll learn a lot about a guy just talking with him. You'll spot BS much easier. His personality may be simple difficult to deal with and you can make a decision based upon talking with him/her. Also, tell the seller you are not comfortable with paying for item before pickup. every item I bought that was large, the seller allowed me to pay on site, not even a pre- payment with paypal. You just need to express you are interested and will buy if item is indeed as described. If you can communicate this and seller agrees you may have a good deal. I would NOT pay in full with paypal because if the description is close to accurate and you are not happy, you have not much to stand on with paypal for refund. Tell the guy you'll bring a cashiers check for full amount and if item is as described you'll buy but ask specific detailed questions on the item over the phone and your odds increase substantially
