Elk in WI

was staying in price county last weekend and rode up to clam lake never knew they had elk in wi around that area was wondering if anyone has seen one near or on the trail

They re-introduced them into the Clam Lake area back in 1995. I believe the heard is around 150 or so. Many times on the way to the UP we have encountered large 5X5's and cows on the roadway. Stopped one time time to snap some shots and had a huge bull buggle about 25 yds away! Awesome to have them just about 2hrs from home.

Yup, I've seen them in that area over the years. They have the right of way crossing 77 west of Clam Lake there.

Only once, a cow and her calf, at least that's what it appeared to be by the size difference of the two. Then again, that wasn't exactly on a trail up there...... ;)

So far no luck. Was hopeful that I might see some from a trail on a Feb trip this year since I had seen some from the road in Jan and I figured they were moving around.

They don't seem particularly fearful of vehicles but maybe just don't like the braaaping. Last fall I had a big male amble up on county road GG in front of my truck while I was stopped watching some females (elk that is) off the road in the woods. We were eyeball to eyeball and I can't say for sure but I think he just sneered at me before he took his sweet time crossing the road.

Agreed. It could also be a little terrifying if a person weren't expecting one to be in the middle of the trail. They are huge. Although, if I were on my low rider 79 I think I could cruise right under a good sized male without disturbing a single hair. Guess all I could say is "Wow, that was nuts."

Probably have to get off the trail, go slow, and travel alone or maybe with one other sled to have the best chance of a sighting. This is my future strategy but with my luck, my camera batteries would be dead. Maybe if the herd continues to increase in size, sightings from a trail might become more common.
