SledTL,

What physics class are you taking, I assume general/classical physics? If so, I hope it is calculus based physics, algebra based general physics doesn't get you very far in science/engineering majors.

Just out of curiosity what type of classes are you taking? Are you in a program that lets you take college courses during high school? I think that program in Minnesota was/is called "Senior to Sophomore".

I agree with polarisrider1---Kettering is the way to go. Takes a bit longer but they have an excellent co-op program with top companies. You get hands on experience, earn a salary to defray college costs, and when you graduate you will already have work experience to add to your resume'. When my son graduated he had his choice between six top companies.

Well, I do have a clue, lol. My oldest who is 28 is doing very well also out of Kettering. He got into the digital billlboard business with two other Kettering buddies and has made a nice fortune at his young age. When you see a digital billboard he more than likely was involved in the brain that runs all the pretty colors.
He interned with Magna Donnelly and worked on the heated mirrors and digital read outs on rear view mirrors for Mercedes.

That's pretty sweet...cool life that he has probably a very nicely furnished one too

Good to hear that you understand that you aren't going to be able to skip math and physics in college by taking ap courses in any science or engineering program. I have talked to people, parents of/and students, who are taking ap classes and give the impression that they think just that. College level calculus, physics, and chemistry are a lot more rigorous than any ap high school class.

I get the impression you are well ahead of most your age when it comes to planning post high school/college plans, heck you still have another year of high school. Whatever you decide to study, just make sure it is something that interests you. Don't chose something based on potential salary. If you take some engineering classes for instance and decide you just aren't into it, find another field of study you like. I ended up in chemistry after taking a class my freshmen year, never gave it much thought until a year later and looked back on it and realized I found it interesting and did well in the class. Then took the next chemistry class and did well and was still interested in it so I decided to stick with it.

Thanks for all the replies it is very nice to talk with some people who have dealt with these things in real life

Hey polarisrider1---My boy is 28 also. It appears they were at Kettering at the same time.

You can do fine with a BS degree. The important thing is to do well - this can be said about anything in life but especially true for an engineering education. We try to hire the best of the best. We don't even look at someone with a low 3.x GPA. So if you enjoy it, do well, get a degree in a high demand field, you should do quite well. Nothing wrong with getting an MS either. It doesn't work out the same for everyone. People talk of being corporate slave and the such and I'm sure that happens. I work about 50 hours a week and have worked about that give or take for most of my career. I now get 5 weeks of vacation and 12 paid holidays. That is 7+ paid weeks off a year. Working for a big company can have other perks as well, like stock plans and options. Most important thing is to enjoy what you do. I don't think you need to spend big bucks on a high end college. You can get a good engineering education at some place like North Dakota and come out with less than 60K of debt. It won't be hard to pay off that given you succeed in school. Good luck in whatever you do...and do it well.

All that glitters is Gold. Run with success, it will breed success. Run with failure and that's what you will get. Meaning run with the crowd you want to be, not the ones who want to hold you back. Worked for me.
