I am looking at buying a new sled sometime this spring or summer and am stuck on what to do. I am stuck between the Renegade 600 ETech or the 800R renegade. They both have their advantages and disadvantages. I am wondering what you all have to say about them.
Thanks

The 800r is different from the 800e-tech.The 600 e-tech is about 117hp and the 800 is about 154hp.I would go with the 800.

I have a 2008 800r that has been a very good snowmobile. It gets great gas mph and oil is not too bad either. I have 1 more year of warranty so I cam going to keep it. Its going to depend on what type of riding you like to do. I am 100percent trail riding. I will get a 4 stroke for my next sled. They have enough speed and have close to the xp handling. The 130 hp 4tec looks right for a trail rider. I have rode a 600 etech and the mpg was great. I would go to dootalk.com and read what they say about all 3 of them.

I'd go with the e-tek whether its a 600 or 800. I have the 800R but ride with 2 600 e-teks and the fuel efficiency/oil consumption is amazing.

Lots of guys like the 800r, however I sold mine this year and put 2000 miles on my E-Tec 600 and love it. Garage and trailer are almost smoke free, no choking, super fuel efficient, and minimum oil consumption. It is not as potent as the 800 but rockets enough for me. (160lbs)

I was in the market last year and was in the same dilemma as you. My sled at the time was a 02 600 MXZ and I wanted the new chasis and also a different motor if I was spending the $. I was able to test ride the 09 600ETEC with a local dealer and much to my surprise, I had an issue with the ETEC. I did not like the low end. Now, the mid-range was awesome but when trail riding in the woods I like the snappy response as my 02 600 had. So, the dealer had a left over 08 800r and as much as I didn't want the bigger motor the salesman guarantee'd me it would be snappy like my 600. And I have to tell you it is! It's got good low end for me and by far has a TON of mid and high! The mileage is better than I thought and that I put in 1/2 to 1 gallon less of fuel than my wife's 02 600 when we fill up. I know the ETEC's are better yet on fuel and oil but if you like having some extra horses under you then I'd go with the 800r or 800ETEC. I do want the 800ETEC one day for the same reasons as others have stated (smoke, fuel, oil etc...). Hopefully I'll get to test ride it first and that I'll like what I see.... Just my .02.

harski,
You bring up a good point that I have thought about. I have a geared and clutched 01 MXZ 700 and it has a lot of low end pull and I am worried that nothing stock will feel the same. I want a the new XP chassis but don't want to lose the power. I also like the idea of saving fuel and oil, but the new 800Etech are way to costly for me. The question is will I be happy with the 600 that has the same HP as my 700.

I bought a new '09 800R Reng. this winter and it will be everything and more (a lot more) then your 01 was. Crack the throttle at 80 and you are going to feel it! If you looking for an overall great sled with good fuel and oil economy get the 600 etec. If you buy a 800 don't complain about oil and gas -- It's an 800! The ride on the XP format is amazing. Ride all day and not complain about muscle pain. Either choice you win! Well you'll really win with the 800R! lol

01,

Like I said in my previous post I am putting in less fuel in the '08 800 than my wife's '02 600. Now I'm not the snocross wanna be on the trail but I do hit the gas when I can on the straightaways and etc... so I don't really take it easy either. This was my biggest worry buying the bigger motor to get the low end that I feel comfortable with but it ended up working out. I have heard some horror stories on fuel economy and reliability on the 800's but, knock on wood, I've been really pleased up til now. It's a great feeling to snap the throttle and feel the pull. My wife and I switched the other day and I couldn't believe what a pooch that 600 is to me now!! I had the throttle pinned and thought to myself "this all this thing has? What the?" Needless to say I'm definitely hooked on the 800!

I would also suggest getting on DOOTALK to see what others have said or are saying.

Good luck!

Just got back from out West and my 600 ETEK has all the power I need and my Son went everywhere out there with His. We have over 5000 Miles on them now with no problems. No Smoke, good Mileage, 800R is old Carb Sled, If you want one, pick up a left over they should be cheaper.

I will add that my next one will probably be a 4 Tek, my Wife has more low end than a 800R in my opinion and then there is no Oil or Smoke to worrry about.

I do not know how many miles you ride a year. I have 5000 on my 2008 800r well I hate to say it but it only had 90 pounds of pressure per cylinder. And was making a grinding noise at 35 mph. Took it to the dealer they think its warranty time for a new motor. So we will see next week. This has changed my mind it will be a 4tec next time. Its hard to beat the 4strokes for trail riding,

Yes if i did not use the Citgo it would of only lasted 4000 and not made the last trip. Well I can say its never been towed. I guess I am 1 for 1 you have me beat at 3 for 3.

I am also considering a new 2011 sled. My current sled is an 02 Ski-Doo MXZ 600 with a 136" track extension kit. I love the hole shot and snappiness of the sled. I rode my nephew's 09 600 E-TEC Renegade a couple weeks ago and the power on that was great! Very snappy and more mid and top end power than my 02. The 600 E-TEC seems to have been pretty dialed in from when they released it two years ago and the reports on the new 800 E-TEC are very positive so far. If I can afford it, I am going with the 800 E-TEC. If you don't need or want that much power (and save a few bucks) I don't think you could go wrong with the 600 E-TEC also. The 800R Power TEK is still available on some models, but I've read that the 800 E-TEC has even more hp and is quite a bit smoother. I would probably get the 600 E-TEC although I usually take a trip to the mountains every year so that's why I think I'm going with the 800 E-TEC.

oil did not effect 2 out of 3 of them, those aren't motor related. :D i'm just sayin it's kinda odd that it blows up 500 miles after i switch to sea and snow. and I've never been towed either :D 500 blew up in my yard. my 700 made it to dealer and the other 700 i made it to a friends house 1 mile after hearing a funny noise, i look and coolant gone.

I was actually one of the higher miles ones for a 2008. They all went out about 4000 miles. Well I just hope it gets a complete motor. The good thing my warranty is good till Nov 2011. Who knows when its fixed it might be replaced with a new 4tec.

I went from a 02 Summit 800 to a 06 Renegade 600 sdi. The 600 e tech is everything I love about the 600 sdi only better. MPG is great, oil use is much less and it's blend not full synthetic. It runs on 87 octane not 92. In my opinion the only thing the 800s are good for is going fast [WOT] 90 mph plus, but how often do you do that? and drainning your wallet. I ride the U.P. exclusively on and off trail and never wish I had more power. I think the new technology is great and no doubt the 800 e tech will be a winner. About the only reason I can see to justify the 800 is your weight. If you are over 210 lbs then the extra power requirements will make the deceision for you. As for me my next sled will be a Summit Everest with the 600 e tech.
