exhaust valves

2011 Polaris 600 cfi, pulled exhaust valves to clean, took black cover off, spring inside one was rusted and had broke, figure moisture got in there after cleaning this past spring, after further review, seen both the black covers have a hole in the center, question is, is them holes supposed to be there? BTW, I already have new springs, gaskets, etc to put it back together. Just found it odd that they both have a hole in the center of them. Thanks.

All of my Polaris' have the hole in the cover, may need the hole to make the valve open and close properly.

When the sled is on the jack stand you can rev the motor up an watch the end of the valves poke out of the holes to see if they are working .
